Portuguese Army camp at Mueda, northern Mozambique. Band of guerrilla's launch surprise attack, killing several Portuguese officers and several more men. Dynamite facilities. Washington. State Department. Intelligence reports of attack. Africa Bureau resigned. European Bureau dismisses attack as insignificant. Portuguese Embassy denies any attack took place. Lisbon. U.S. Ambassador, Admiral Anderson tries to talk Portuguese Foreign Minister into granting territories independence, being careful not to offend. Portuguese refuse, invite Anderson to tour Mozambique. Dar-es-Salaam. Later in the war. UN Committee of 24 hears petition of Mondlane. Sees weapons captured from Portuguese: American rifles, German artillery, all NATO issue, officially not to be used in Africa. Photographs of British planes and gunboats. India, Sweden, Eastern countries encourage Mondlane, draw up resolution condeming Portugal, and issue statements to the effect that the meeting was profitable. U.S. votes against resolution, suggests it would be easier if meetings were held in New York. Dar-es-Salaam. Later.
