I 28 AFRICA 22 August 1963 Phiri said: "There is no democracy in the United States. I want to point out that the United. States is the pilot of what is evil in the West." The American Negroes' struggle is a just one and of immense significance, Phiri said, adding: "We of the UNIP support the American Negroes' struggle and condemn racial discrimination in its various manifestations." Representatives in Algiers Peking NCNA in English to Asia and Europe 17^9 GMT 21 August I963--B (Text) Algiers, 20 August—Representatives of African nationalist parties in Algiers issued statements this afternoon enthusiastically welcoming Chairman Mao Tse-tungTs statement supporting the struggle of the American Negroes, describing it as a "great document." Robert Resha, permanent representative in Algiers of the African National Congress (ANC) of South Africa said: "Chairman Mao Tse-tungTs statement is a very good document, which concerns not only the struggle of our American Negro brothers, but also that of all the colored races exposed to the oppression of colonialism and imperialism today." He asked: "Can any of the imperialists in the world repudiate this statement?" "Evidently this constitutes a great encouragement for all those who oppose racial discrimination, exploitation of man in the world. It has encouraged not only the American Negroes but also the people of South Africa." He held that this statement of great significance would doubtless always remain in the memory of the people of the whole world until imperialism, colonialism, and racial discrimination are completely eliminated. Tennyson Makiwane, another ANC representative, described Chairman Mao's statement as very timely. It will strengthen the struggle of the people of the world against imperialism, colonialism., and racial discrimination, he said. Cortez, Algiers representative of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA, said that he is very pleased with and encouraged by the statement because it "has extremely great significance for the struggle against imperialism, colonialism, and racial discrimination." These nationalist representatives conaid_er that the point raised in Chairman Mao's statment that "in the final analysis, national struggle is a question of class struggle" is not only very correct politically but also conforms to reality. Robert Resha said: "The basis of discrimination is class exploitation and oppression."
