7 P R E LI IVi a ■MOZAMBIQUE LIBERATION FRONT /JYVWU4** U\*\ lAX No. 100 NIASSA PROVINCE - EASTERN MILITARY REGION - This is the present military situation in the Eastern region of Niassa Province: PRELIMO forces are intensifying their campaign of ambushes and attacks, checking all movements of enemy troops, who are now virtually immobilised in their military bases. Most of the bases in this region have to be supplied by air. On the other hand the enemy has intensified areal^ bombardment and is trying to create conditions which would jgive\^ him some minimal initiative in the campaigns one of the measures they are taking for this purpose is to abandon the sabotaged roads and build new ones, using labour from the strategic hamlets (for examples the roads of MTELELA, ANTONIO-MAUA and MSANGULA) All these at'tampta are frustrated by PRELIMO forces. In the case of the air-raids, although they have caused losses among the population and killed some guerrillas ■ they have not in any way prevented our forces from carrying on a vigorous offensive campaign. 1. In 9 ambushes on the roads of LUIS, LITUNDE, ANTONIO- MAUA, LUVILA-CHICONONO, LISSAU-MTSLELA and ANTONIO-RSVIA, PRELIMO guerrillas destroyed 9 Portuguese military vehicles. In three of these ambushes on the 19th and 28th of May and 4th of June, our guerrillas could, number 26 killed and at least 20 wounded. We do not know the casualties the enemy suffered in the other ambushes,, 2. On the 17th of May, enemy troops v/ent with the people of a strategic hamlet to open a new road, leaving the old one to link further on with the road going to Vila Cabral. Our guerrillas were informed of the enemy's intention, and moved to that place. When the Portuguese heard that there were guerrillas in the area, even before our forces had made an attack, .they abandoned their plans for the road and returned to their bases. COnt/.
