- 9 - Two More Planes Shot Dawn and about 20 Portuguese Soldiers Killed Since the beginning of April, the military activities of the Portuguese in Northern Mozambique has been characterized by intensive and frequent bombing of the African villages, which has forced a great part of the population to take refuge in the bush. As a preliminary measure to the bombing, the Portuguese authorities made all the Europeans living in that region, including the missionaries, move to the urban centers. The FRELIMO militants possess anti-aircraft guns. They placed themselves in strategic points and shot down two Portuguese military planes. 1. On April 3 the FRELIMO fighters shot at a Portuguese military plane in the region of Mueda at a place called Chudi. Hit by the antiaircraft guns, the plane attempted to fly to the Mueda airfield where it crashed to the ground in flames. All the crew died. 2. A similar operation took place on April 5, approximately at the same place. The only difference was that the plane did not arrive at the airfield, it Crashed down about four miles from Mueda. There were 9 planes at Mueda, there are now only 6. 3. On April 6 FRELIMO militants attacked a convoy of three Portuguese military cars on the road between Mocimboa do Rovuma and Mueda. The first car carried African mercenary soldiers serving the Portuguese0 The second and third were loaded with Portuguese soldiers. Our militants let the first car pass and attacked the two others with grenades and machine gun fire. About twenty Portuguese soldiers were killed. Three FRELIMO militants were wounded. 4. On the same day (April 6) the people confirmed that a group of six Portuguese stationed at the Mission of Imbuho were stealing maize that had been grown by the people in the region between Mueda and Nangade. One FRELIMO guerrilla was sent to put an end to the thefts. Assisted by the people who were armed with home-made guns, our militant organized an ambush. Three of the Portuguese were killed. When the other Portuguese returned the fire, the Mozambicans turned back without any casualties THE I.C.C.J.
