- 3 - The same applies to France: for example, in March, 1963, France signed an agreement with Portugal to establish military bases in the Azores Islands in exchange for building 120 warships and submarines for Portugal. On September 25, 196^+, four escort warships and four submarines, valued at 520 million francs, were supplied to Portugal by France. How can we Mozambicans therefore be surprised at the attack on Stanleyville and Paulis - or at any attack coming from the imperialistic countries, directed against nationalist forces? Concerning the plot, we know that there exists a permanent plat against all African progressive forces, organized, directed and financed by the western powers. This one in Tanzania was discovered before it could be put into action. The danger was lessened but did not disappear. A potential plot persists. What are the reasons? We have already referred to them above. No colonialist country gives up its colonies because it is moved by moral considerations. No imperialist country can forget its basic necessity which is that of possessing colonies or at least zones of influence which serve as colonies. We have to defend ourselves,, We have to create a solid power able to stop all acts of imperialistic aggression and able to neutralize all manoeuvres of the colonialist and neo-colonialist states. It is in the real unity of Africa, based on the aspirations and will of each person and of all the peoples of Africa, that there lies hope for our victory, which is in fact our hops for survival,, But that unity cannot exist only in empty platonic condemnations: it must be made concrete and active. The Portuguese and Christianity Overseas In their attempt for world support, the Portuguese use many arguments to justify the atrocities and barbarities which they commit against the innocent and defenseless people who live in colonies under their control. They say they are overseas for the Christian purpose of civilizing and Christianizing the heathens and of bringing them into the western fold. By saying this they intend to stir up the pity of the pious and naive souls who will give them not only moral but also material support. But those who are not naive and have an open mind can see that the Portuguese are not in the colonies for the purpose of defending Christian principles, but rather for devilish ones.
