- 5 - aspiration for freedom. The Portuguese knew exactly what had happened to Mario but they kept it from the rest of the world. The only thing they published was his speech. The Portuguese invite journalists to come to Mozambique. These journalists never get to see the suffering and the killing that goes on all over the country. They meet only Portuguese, drink the best Port wine and stay at the luxurious Polana Hotel. Their bills are paid by the Portuguese. These journalists learn nothing about the suffering of the Mozambique people. Progress The Portuguese and their allies speak about progress in order to convince the world that there is no reason to make Portugal give up its colonies^.. -What progress are they talking about? Do they mean the progress Portugal is making with the help of the United States in building up a Btronger army, navy and air force to be used to deprive the undefended Mozambique people of their liberty and their land? The Portuguese are also making progress in building factories, stores and hotels for themselves. But when we want progress in Mozambique, it is not just the progress of the white man of which we speak. We want progress for the Africans. If there is progress in Mozambique, let the Portuguese say how many Africans run their own businesses, how many have stores, or hold administrative posts. Let them say how many black engineers, lawyers and doctors there are. The world would laugh at their progress. In Lourengo Marques they built a native quarter, a housing development for Africans. During the rainy season, the houses are under water, ^hat is the progress Portugal is bringing to us. Harmony One of the intentions of Americo Tomas' visit was to show the world that there is inter-racial harmony in Mozambique. In the August 1964 issue of the National Geographic Magazine, pictures were published by Mr. Wentzel in support*of the Portuguese story. In one of these pictures you can see a white and Negro lady sitting side by side. This is supposed to prove that there is harmony between the races in Mozambique. There is as much harmony in Mozambique as there is between whites and blacks in Mississippi. This does not mean that you cannot find some people getting along with each other without troubles. But the good relationship of two or twenty does not describe the system, does not tell the truth. In Mississippi and other southern states, many white people can show you pictures of themselves with their arms around their Negro servants. They will tell you that they have no racial problem. Yet these same people will fight to keep Negroes out of good jobs and decent schools. The Portuguese say and do the same things. Like their progress, their harmony is for whites only.
