- 7 - They are beirig menaced and tortured to death and are considered subversive elements to the colonial regime in Mozambique simple because they wanted to attain higher education which is denied them by the Portuguese. How long shall we undergo the colonial yoke and barbarities? How long shall we be enslaved, exploited, tread upon and kept illiterate by the cruel regime of Lisbon? Uprising in l/ilanculos The people of the Pupulwane regulado in Vilanculos, Inhambane district, revolted in February, 196**. They did not agree with the policy of their regulo, Mr. Pupulwane, and wantdd to depose him. But before they could do so, the Portuguese army surrounded them. The leaders of the uprising were the first to be arrested. A detachment of the Portuguese army was sent to protect Pupulwane's house. The Portuguese consider him a good regulo because he is faithful to the Portuguese sovereignty. Is this the peace and tranquility Sarmento Rodrigues referred to? Why did the journalist visit Mozambique? Many things are happening there which they do not publish. They just publish lies telling the people that everything is all right in Mozambique. Perhaps mast of them are more interested in defending the Portuguese attitude toward colonialism while others receive money ftom the Portuguese to keep silent about the truth and publish lies against our nationalism. While visiting Mozambique, the journalists spent their time in places like the "Polana" all at the expense of the Portuguese Government. Their conclusion - Mozambique is at peace. Situation of Portuguese Prisoners in Mozambique as reported by: Fjlip Johannes Madzodzere The Arrest When I was in Southern Rhodesia in 1960, I joined a Mozambique African burial society for the benefit of Africans of Mozambique. It was an organization to help Mozambicans who were working in Southern Rhodesia. In 1961, I was elected the Chairman of this organization; it was called The Portuguese East Africa Society. Under my leadership the organization ran magnificently, carrying on its aims, objectives, principles and programmes which were laid down in its constitution approved by the Southern Rhodesian Government.
