- 6 - Nevertheless, the natives are prepared to fight against the Authority. Last month the people of Mozambique contributed some money and sent it to Frelimo in Tanganyika. It was about 20,000 escudos (about &700.). They made this sacrifice to help Frelimo organize. Students Arrested in Mozambique It is understood that education is the focal point of social progress, technology, arts and science, development. Promoting education is to promote arts, science, technology and welfare as a whole. But Portugal seems aloof to this truth and does not want to solve the problem of illiteracy in our country. On the contrary, she wants to dominate ignorant people in order to easily exploit them. She does not want the natives to get more knowledge than primary education. In Mozambique about 99% of the people are illiterate. She has recently been attacked by other people because of this problem of illiteracy. She has built a few schools in stratigic points just to show the journalists recent improvements in raising the standard of living of the natives. The journalists must have been impressed and will write many things which can justify the attitude of Portugal towards colonialism. We know Portugal will never do anything in our favor. During five centuries she did nothing else but exploit our people and land. She had more money then. If she could do nothing having money, how can she improve without mdney? Her allies say we should stop fighting and give her a chance to make things right, but how can we believe this? A few months ago a group of young people wanted to leave Mozambique and go to countries where they could get scholarships. There were ^0 boys and girls, all of whom were arrested by the Portuguese Authority. Some were arrested in Manhice, about 72 kilometers north of Lourengo Marqug^ while others were arrested in Southern Rhodesia by the Portuguese PI0E " ' v helped by CID, Rhodesian police. William R. Frye in his article published in Lancaster Sunday News referred to this imprisonment of students. He said: "High school children buzz excitedly in a group, then dissolve when you come near. One day a handful of them are missing. You wonder where they are; the answer is a shrug. 'They have gone away1." A week later it is learned that 12 students have been caught by the Southern Rhodesian Special Branch (secret police), which cooperates closely with PIDE, its Portuguese equivalent, and have been sent back to Lourengo Marques jail.
