12. CIVILIZED TERRORISM MSalazarist propaganda could find no basis tc justify the campaign of brutality and terror v/hich the colonialists have launched against the Mozambican people. This is either because the national uprising in Mozambique v/as well organised, and because it was not an immediate reaction against recent and wide-scale atrocities against the African population, as had been the case in the earlier uprising of the people of Angola in March 1961. The Mozambican nationalists attack only military objectives and the forces of the colonialist army, leaving the civilians alone when they do not intervene in military actions. This fact is well known to the European population and cannot be ignored by the authorities. However, it' is not taken into consideration, and the wave cf hatred and barbarity which has risen against the Africans in Angola is being repeated in Mozambique under the incitment of the official authorities, both civilian and military. "To kill negros under flimsy pretexts or even v/ithout any pretext, has become a habit of the Portuguese soldiers. They are ordered to do this by the Military Commander, General Caeiro Carrasco.■ Perhaps influenced by his own name (carrasco means executioner), the General is explicit in his orders to the officials: 11'Kill everyone v/ho is black!1 " *And v/hat about the children, General?1 "'Are the children not back, you ass?1 "This answer silenced the official who had asked the question. "On the Island of Ibo the main concentration camp of the colony has been installed. There nationalists or these suspected of sympathy v/ith the nationalist cause are interned and exterminated. As in Angola, the methods used to force the prisoners to 'confess' are highly refined in cruelty.
