9. "DIARIO DE MOPAMBIQUE" SUSPENDED AGAIN In a decree of May 21st, the Governor General of Mozambique ordered the suspension of publication of the newspaper Diario de Mozambique for a period of ten days. The reason given for the suspension was that the newspaper had published an article without having previously submitted it to censorship. The article was written by the Bishop of Beira, Don Sebastiao Soares de Resende, and was entitled "Meditation on the 25th Anniversary of the Missionary Agreement". The part of the "Meditation"-* which provoked this reaction from the Portuguese authorities is one more manifestation of Portuguese self-criticism. It states: "Let us finish this meditation with one more thought. Looking retrospectively at Mozambique, all of us feel immensely sorry to think of what Mozambique could be and should be today, not an -under-developed country, but a region normally developed. This is something we have lost, and the time we have also lost cannot be retrieved, and the facte of the situation are such that we run the risk of not ever being able to remedy them. Because we did not do anything at a time when everything was extremely easy to do, now we have to do everything at a time when the smallest thing is extrordinar- ily difficult to do....We have to repair the past gloriously...." This demands no comment from us. ********* COMMUNIQUE OF PIDE ABOUT ARRESTS IN MOZAMBIQUE "Continuing its activities against any attempt at subversion, and after the arrest of elements who formed the Fourth Regional. Directorate of the terrorist organisation called FRELIMO, whose names were published in a press release of December 27, 1964, the delegation in Mozambique of the International Police for the Defense of the State (PIDE) paid special attention to the liasions and ramifications of FRELIMO in Lourenco Marques and environs. "Thus, after patient and persistent work, it was possible for PIDE to discover the extent of that organisation and arrest the persons who participated most actively in its conspiratorial activities and supported it: attempts at subversion. PIDE defined their responsibilities and accused them of crimes against the security of the State.
