9. 6. On the 23rd of April, a convoy of four Portuguese military cars was ambushed. One of the cars was destroyed. Eleven Portuguese soldiers were killed and others were wounded. In the regions which we have attacked, all the people have joined the FRELIMO soldiers and now live in the bush under the protection of our militants. CABO DELGADO PROVINCE 7. On the 27th of April, FRELIMO militants downed a Portuguese military plane which was flying from Diaca to Mocimboa da Praia in the region of Quinheu. The crew of three was killed. 8. On the 15th of May, a group of 30 Portuguese soldiers was ambushed in Nadula near Diaca. The soldiers were stealing maize, cassava and fruits stored there by the people. Our militants shot at them, killing 14 and wounding several more. The Portuguese soldiers did not shoot back; they ran away. 27 May 1965 ********* PORTUGUESE SELF-CRITICISM In our last editorial v/e referred to the speech made at the National Assembly in Lisbon by Alexandre Lobato, Portuguese deputy of Mozambique. In that speech, Lobato asked the Portuguese government to send whites en masse from Portugal to Mozambique. From- the complete text of the speech, it can be seen that this measure is designed to remedy what the deputy calls "errors of the Portuguese administration". It is obvious that the sending of.more colonialists to Mozambique, far from solving the Portuguese problems, will aggravate them, but it is interesting to analyse the . self-criticism of the Portuguese deputy. Thus, for example, we have repeated constantly that the laws concerningthe colonies promulgated by Portugal during the past years are not made to be put into effect, but are intended only to deceive public opinion, "convincing" the public that the Portuguese government is not opposed to self-determination for their colonies. . t . The Deputy Lobato expressly recognises this in his speech: "The province is faced with grave problems which result from the phase of .transition in which it finds itself, and which is characterised by the abolition of the colonial society, which obviously did not disappear between 6 and 7 September, 1961 (the date on which a law made all Mozambicans Portuguese citizens); by the abolition of the colonial economy which also did not disappear with the new Code of Labour; by the abolition of the colonial administration which also did not disappear with the inoperative
