4. 3. On the 6th of April, FRELIMO militants attacked a convoy of 3 Portuguese military cars on the road between Mocimboa do Rovuma and Mueda. The first car carried African mercenary soldiers serving the Portuguese. The second and third were loaded with Portuguese soldiers. Our militants allowed the first car to pass, and attacked the two others with grenades and machine gun fire. About 20 Portuguese soldiers were killed. Three FRELIMO militants were wounded. 4. On the same day, the people confirmed that a group of six Portuguese stationed at the mission of Imbuho v/ere stealing maize that had been grown by the people in the region between Mueda and Nangade. One FRELIMO guerilla v/as. sent to put an end to the thefts. Assisted by the people, v/ho were armed v/ith home-made guns, our militant organised an ambush. Three of the Portuguese were killed. When the other Portuguese returned their fire, the Mozambicans turned back without casualties. . * * * Communique No. 18 - 28 April 1965 NYASA PROVINCE 1. On the 31st of March, the militants of FRELIMO attacked with machine gun fire a small boat travelling along the edge of Lake Nyasa from Maniamba to Cobue. The boat was carrying Portuguese soldiers and the administrator of the circunscri^ao of Maniamba. As a result of the attack, several Portuguese soldiers v/ere killed and others wounded; however, we do not know their number. 2. On the same day, the FRELIMO fighters ambushed a group of Portuguese soldiers 5 kms. from the administrative post of Cobue at Mala. A Portuguese officer and 3 privates were killed, and the pistol machine gun belonging to the officer (a German gun, no. 72489) and ammunition were captured. 3. On the 3rd of April, FRELIMO militants knew that about 100 Portuguese soldiers v/ere established in a village known as Mbueca on the shore of Lake Nyasa. The Portuguese had occupied the church and the huts, which had been left empty by the people of the village, who were forced to run away after the massacres made in that region by the colonialist troops. The Portuguese intended to build houses there, and had already begun the work. For two days our militants organised.themselves, watched the movements of the Portuguese soldiers, and studies a plan of attack. On the 5th of April at 3 o'clock in the morning, they attacked,the huts v/here the Portuguese soldiers were sleeping. It v/as a surrpise attack v/ith grenades and machine guns, after which the FRELIMO partisans turned back before the Portuguese soldiers had time to react. Next day our militants learned that 32 soldiers had been killed and 17 v/ere wounded. Later a boat took all the Portuguese soldiers away. In the course of this action, 2 of our militants were wounded.
