EDITORIAL There is no change, no alteration in the Portuguese attitude to the colonial problem. The same racist principles, which have always inspired the Portuguese colonial policy, continue. Today, as before, the Portuguese deputy from Mozambique to the National Assembly in Lisbon declares that "it is dogmatic that v/ithout whites the negro does not evolve in Africa", that "Mozambique is a province without sufficient whites, v/ho are the best and only possible agents for the progress of the negro", and that "the only way to make the negro progress is to increase the number of white settlers. These declarations were made in March 1965, when most of the African countries have already affirmed themselves as independent states, and a great number of them already have built an economic, social and political structure which places them on a much higher level than "white" Portugal. "Without whites the negro does not evolve", says the Portuguese deputy. We shall answer thus: If there is any relationship between the whites and the progress of the negro, that relationship can only be this — it is because of the whites that the negroes could not follow their normal evolution, subjugated as they were in a-slave regime. Whoever knows the history of colonialism in Africa will easily understand the truth of this. Portugal did not learn the lesson of history. She does not follow the evolution of the times, of societies, of cultures, of civilisations. Portugal is a country of the Middle Ages, where ignorance reigns. It is necessary that a profound revolution shaKe the Portuguese mentality and wake the people from the sleep of darkness and ignorance to which their leaders have condemned them. We have learned the lesson of History. History teaches us that no power in the world is strong enough to oppose the firm will of a people for a long period. We were a free people, and v/e want to be free again. Liberty is almost within our grasp. It is necessary only to win it. Our decision and determination find their expression in the important military victories that our people have achieved in the fight against the invader. The fight has intensified already in the Nyassa Province and its roots spread to the entire south. Our people know that they have to fight and to win, because the racist principles and the measures of exploitation that the Portuguese follow and apply are aimed at destroying our existence as a nation. On the 10th of April, a few days after the Deputy Lobato asked for more whites, 867 colonists were sent from Lisbon to Mozambique. They are going to occupy the most fertile lands, expelling Mozambicans from them. They v/ill occupy the well-paid jobs, leaving to the Africans positions as servants and menials.
