- 10 - of the patriotic national liberation forces of the Congolese people against neo-colonialism and Tshombe, the murderer of Patrice Lumumba. The serious situation created by the imperialist aggression against the Congolese people demands the active solidarity of all peace loving peoples and Governments in order to eliminate the danger which threatens the whole of the African continent. Consequently, the Conference appeals to all peace loving peoples and states to give added moral and material support to the revolutionary forces in the Congo, and to launch a wide campaign of action in order to give the imperialists no opportunity of forcing the Congolese people back into the yoke of colonial oppression. ******** NEWS; * The General Caeiro Carrasco, Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces in Mozambique, is known among the population as the "Star-Studded Beast" due to his notorious stupidity. V/e do not intend to offend him: v/e are just quoting what the people (and even the Portuguese soldiers) say about him. In hie last speech, for example, at the inauguration of a swimming- pool in the Military Club of Lourenco Marques, he said: "It is with all the pride of a Portuguese that I open these waters, because I cannot forget my patriotic duty: my ancestors have built the Portuguese Empire in the sea, and in that way they came here" - and when he said here, he pointed with his finger to the surface of the swimming pool. * According to the Concordat signed between Portugal and the Holy See in 1940, the education of the African population in the Colonies belongs entirely to the Catholic Church. The Church concentrates most of its activity in the "Ensino Rudimentar" - preliminary to the Primary school. The quality of this instruction is shown by this: The people say that there are four classes, which correspond to the progress made by the students. Those classes are: 1. Class of the Sun and Sand - the classes are given on the grounds of the Mission, and the students write in the sand, with stones. 2. Class of the Sun and the Chalk - the classes are still given on the grounds, but there is now a blackboard and a chalk; the most advanced students are called, as a privilege, to write on the blackboard. 3. Class of the Sun and the Slate - as a sign of progress, each group of 10 or 20 students gets a slate to work with.
