For example, on 6th November the first 4 units of the North-Ameri can Navy arrived in Lisbon. They v/ere going to participate in the military exercise tfPonta de Aco". Included in those units was the fast-attack-transport "Procono", of 12.000 tons,,in which the Com- mander-in Chief of the Amphibian Fleet and of the 2nd Division of the Naval Marines. The warships were transporting a total of 9.000 men. The North-American atomic ship "Savanah'; "visitedM the port of Lisbon, from 17 to 23 of November. The Counter-Admiral Pacaud, Coimnander of the French Maritime Zone of the Indian Ocean and of the Naval Estrategic Base of Diego Suarez "visited" Mozambique from 3 to 9 November. On the 12 November the 2nd group of war ships of the North- American Amphibian Fleet, composed of 6 units, arrived at the Ta- gus. It comprised of 326 officers, 1295 sailors and 2473 marines. German soldiers are training in Portugal. A French missile tracking station is going to be established in one of the Azores Islands, Horta. On the 3rd January the General Secretary of NATO will be visiting Lisbon for talks with Salazar. A CORDIAL APPROACH From 1962 closer economic and military relations between Portugal and South-Africa were formed, in order to maintain white domination in the Southern Africa. In February 1963 the South-African revue "Check" published an article from which we quote extracts, because it expresses the exact nature of the relations, the intentions and the aims of the Salazar-Verwoerd alliance. "After many years of indiferent policy now a cordial approach is being made "The Europeans of the South part of Africa already refer to South Africa for financial and, if necessary, military assistance in order to maintain their independence. That is the case of Portugal. And the South-Africans realised also that the Zambeze river, the Angolan forests, the Savanas of the North of Mozambique are the first defence lines against the threat represented by the pan- africanist Africans from the North." "Pretoria looks for allies in the Continent, and is prepared to support them, be their government European, African or Mixed. Anyhow, Tschombe is nothing but a South-African hero".
