On the 9th December, 1964, the second anniversary of the Republic of Tanganyika, the Central Committee of FRELIMO sent the following message to His Excellency, Mwalimu J.K. Nyerere, President of the Republic of Tanzania; Three years have passed since the day v/hen the people of Tanganyika obtained their independence and freed themselves from the yoke of colonialism. Three years: during which, and in spite of the immense difficulties created by the imperialist powers, Tanganyika'has come a long way in the construction of the ideals of African unity, and peace and progress for the people. The Union of Tanganyika and Zanzibar, as well as the total and unconditional support given to the nationalist movements who still fight for the liberation of their countries, is concrete proof of these ideals on v/hich the political line of the United Republic of Tanzania is based. On this* solemn occasion of the celebration of the second Republic anniversary, FRELIMO wishes to express greetings and congratulations to the people of Tanzania, to you, Mr. President, to TANU and the Afro-Shirazi Party. FRELIMO notes with appreciation the progress achieved during this short period after the attainment of Independence. The Development Plan which is now in operation and in v/hich every citizen fully participates,- is the only road to achieve the long desired goal v/hich led the masses to fight resolutely against colonialism in this countryo * The part the United Republic has played in world affairs, particularly African affairs, is internationally recognised. V/e realise v/ith much appreciation the steps this country is taking towards, total African liberation and unity. The recent plot engineered by certain Western powers is a clear indication of the progressive measures pursued by the Government in the interests of the continent, interests rhich, at all costs must be opposed by the imperialists and the enemies of Africa. Excellency,. Independence arid Liberty are invaluable. We, who are still under colonial domination, know this only too well. The people of Tanzania are free; today they celebrate their conquered liberty. FRELIMO and the people of Mozambique share this great joy with the Tananzian people• We shall be at all your celebrations. One day the people of Mozambique wiil be free; our Tanzanian brothers will then celebrate our freedom v/ith us. LONG LIVE THE UNITED REPUBLIC OF TANZANIA. LONG LIVE THE SOLIDARITY BETWEEN THE PEOPLE OF TANZANIA AND MOZAMBIQUE.
