l'- - " ' ; 4. VI. Political Oppression in Mozambique People are being arrested daily for reasons of: a) bein& found reading a newspaper in the public places; b) mentioning an independent state in Africa, the country and leaders; c) saying the name of any African political leader; d) explaining some news on the foreign news in the local nev/spapers; e) by mentioning the word independence or being found in possession of political leaders photographs; f) by quarrelling v/ith a European master or asking increase in salary; g) by listening to foreign radio programmes; and many things like these which are considered as political activities. To maintain this PIDE employed many people, including women, to go around the colony to listen to the conversation of the people. VII. What is PIDE? PIDE is a secret police force of Salazar National Union which includes some hooligans and thugs v/ho terrorize people in Mozambique and are paid for this irresponsible job. The Portuguese are terrorizing and torturing the people because they do. not agree with the colonial dictatorship. The Portuguese are so foolish that they cannot see the negative consequences of their policies. Probably they are afraid of losing their hold on Mozambique, and therefore of losing ail the economic and social privileges which they now enjoy. Even•though most Portuguese colonial settlers are Roman Catholic, they do not follow the moral dictates of the Catholic Church. They believe in white supremacy, they exploit the people of Mozambique, they oppress the masses and use them as if they were slaves. Mozambicans do not v/ish to be controlled by Portugal, and are now preparing to destroy Portuguese colonialism by direct action as prepared by the MOZAMBIQUE LIBERATION FRONT. Mozambique geographically is Africa and politically is for Africans. Therefore, I do not see any reason why it should not have a black, majority rule. VIII. Conclusion To end my statement, I want to make it quite clear that I am going to follow FRELIMO, its aims, objectives, principles and programme, and I wish to congratulate all MOZAMBICaNS who came forward to sacrifice themselves for a complete liberation of Mozambique and for the establishment of a democratic government from the Portuguese oppression. LONG LIVE FREEDOM! LONG LIVE MOZAMBIQUE! LONG LIVE FRELIMO!
