Therefore, it is not moral reasons which determine the attitude of the Portuguese when they decide to give publicity to these arrests; it is the intention to make people believe that the liberation movement has been crushed. In fact, on the l8th of August, the Chief of PIDE in Mozambique ■ N declared in an interview given to the "Star" of Johannesburg that, with the arrests of these 8 terrorists (JOEL GUDUANE, MATIAS MBOA, LAMEQUE MICHANGULA, DANIEL MAHLAYEYE, JUSTINO SAUL, ANDRE MANJORO, BOMBA TEMBE and ALEXANDRE MACKEL)j with the arrest in January of JOAO REIS, former owner of the newspaper "TRIBUNA", of the journalist and writer LUIS BERNARDO ONWANA, of the poet RUI NOOAR BARRETO, of the painter MALANGATANA VALENTE, and of the poet JOSE CRAVEIRINHAj with the banning of the Associative Center of the Negroes of Mozambique5 and with "hundreds of other arrests made at the same time" - "FRELIMO was completely annihilated". Of course the arrest of those nationalists did not cause the "annihilation" of FRELIMO at all. On the contrary, these mass arrests provoked an immense reaction in the whole country; they increased the awareness of all the people; they made thousands of Mozambicans, until then irresolute, join our movement. These patriots will be brought to trial. "In some months a great political trial will open before the military tribunal of Mozambique, in which the heads of the 4th Operational Command of sabotage and subversion of FRELIMO will be judged" - says the "Diario de Mocambique" of 19 August. We know what a judgment made by PIDE is, we know how the political processes are run in . ... fascist tribunals. Let us recall Hitler's Germany: every Jew brought to court was automatically condemned by the fact of ... being Jewish. Also, those Mozambican nationalists are a priori condemned by.the sole fact that they are nationalists and patriots, and that they refuse to participate in a genocidal war against their own people. However, there is a certain difference between Portugal and Hi.tier's Germany; it is that, to a certain extent,- Portugal is sensible to International.public opinion. If fact, she depends absolutely on foreign aid. And the countries which give her aid can put pressure on her, forcing her to free the Mozambican political prisoners - which is the only way to save them, since all Portuguese tribunals are controlled by PIDE. This is the appeal we make here. The Organisation Amnesty International has already made an appeal in favour of the Mozambican intellectuals. It is necessary that this movement be widened to all countries. All Freedom and Justice loving people must raise their voices and
