UNITY NEWSLETTER NOVEMBER-DECEMBER I967 - 19 - Imperialism studied the situation in both countries and came to the conclusion that as things stood then there was no immediate danger to its investments in that area. That is, they decided, after due consideration, that the liberation movement had not reached a stage then v/here it could upset existing relations between master and servant, oppressor and oppressed, exploiter and exploited. Had a threat of a violent uprising, particularly in South Africa, been judged to be imminent, we venture to say that the verdict of the International Court would have been different. In a situation like that, it would have suited the imperialist powers to press for "a United Nations presence" in South West Africa. This would have assured their immediate and decisive intervention should things "hot up" for the fascist regime in South Africa. Thus the South African Revolution would have been betrayed by the U.N. in the same way that their intervention in the Congo betrayed the Congo Revolution and they must now share the blame together with Tshombe and his fellow assassins for the cruel murder of Patrice Lumumba. Nov/ we are faced v/ith the folly of this same organisation declaring that South West Africa is a territory lav/fully under U.N. trusteeship and that therefore South Africa has no legal right to administer this territory, yet South Africa continuing to dominate South West Africa as before. In spite of this assertion by the U.N., South Africa has audaciously v/hisked away, and continues to do so, South West African -nationals to be tortured and murdered in the South African jails and concentration camps. The U.N. is incapable of doing anything to stop these blatant acts of brigandry in the same way that the British Government finds itself paralysed in the face of the acts of barbarism which the Smith regime daily perpetrates upon the innocent and defenceless people of Zimbabwe. Yet Britain continues to call Rhodesia her colony and Smith an imposter. We are thus left v/ith a situation v/here both Rhodesia and South Africa can violate international lav/ and commit the most violent and heinous crimes against humanity with absolute impunity. The latest of these are the savage sentences which have been imposed upon the thirty- two South West African freedom fighters by a South African court sitting in Pretoria, in terms of the South African Anti-terrorism and Anti- communism Acts. In spite of the resolutions of the United Nations and the loud protests by the international community, the brutal fact remains: South Africa has once again got away with murder. The liberation movement, fortunately, has long ceased to look to the United Nations for succour. It realizes, now more than ever before, that its destiny lies in its own hands. It has also learnt to distinguish between, friend and foe. So it v/ill not be hoodwinked. Meanwhile, v/e strongly condemn the criminal acts committed by the South African regime, aided and abetted by its allies in Britain, America and elsewhere. V/e express our solidarity v/ith the people of South West Africa in their just struggle for human rights and against tyranny, oppression and exploitation. V/e believe that history is on their side and that their just cause will prevail. Published by: UNITY INFORMATION BUREAU 1 P.O. Box 2572 Lusaka I Zambia. ] Central Africa
