208 Standards of Living The standard of living of Indonesians idiich started declining in the late nineteenth century continued to decline at a more rapid pace after World War II. The average annual income per capita for the period 1952-1954 was $80.^^ The rapid increase of population, corruption, rebellion. West Irian dispute, and a host of other factors has resulted in a chronic inflation. The Indonesian currency was quoted officially at Rp. 3.80 to $1.00 in 1951; Rp. 11.40 in 1955; and Rp. 45.00 since 1960. However, black-market quotations at the present are more than ten times the official rate. Prices have risen sharply in all sectors of the economy.
