limited reading, particularly towards the end of long texts. Materials The two short passages used in this experiment were both descriptive in nature. One described characteristics of the bushmen of South Africa, including a discussion of their history, habitat and hunting rituals and the second text described various desert animals, and how they have adapted to their environments. The number of words in each text is presented in Table 1. These passages were broken down into a set of propositions using Turner and Green's (1978) system and were composed of 235-240 propositions. To assess what was recalled by subjects, information included in the recall protocols was matched against the list of propositions that represent the content of each passage. The criteria used to parse each passage into its constituent propositions were used when comparing subjects' recall protocols to the proposition list for each text. The two longer passages were expanded versions of each of the short passages. Procedure In Experiment 2 subjects were assigned to the same text length X reading format condition they were assigned to in Experiment 1. Thus, for example, subjects presented short texts under limited reading in Experiment 1 were also presented the short texts under limited reading in Experiment 2. Half of the subjects in each text length X reading format condition performed Experiment 1 first — receiving the acquisition passages first after the various question- 29
