Product development is not only the systematic and rational application of advances in hasic science but also the combination of engineering ability and sufficient resources. Research is only one unit of the team necessary to develop new products; the cooperation and participation of all organizational departments is required in varying degrees. The program should represent a concerted effort jof the complete manufacturing organization. If such action! is taken, the development program will have a greater 1j opportunity for realizing over-all success. j The road to success through the development and i introduction of new products is not an easy objective to J realize; however, failure need not result if precaution is jf exercised before the product is exposed to the dynamic ;i forces of the marketplace. One person should be charged with the responsibility,I for the development program. This person, in the small j manufacturing firm interested in electro-mechanical prod- jI ucts, is frequently an engineer and often the chief execu- jj tive of the firm. Regardless of the position of the i individual, it is imperative that one person be responsible for the over-all direction and guidance of the development program.
