Hoofing, sheetmetal, and painting appear to increase Curve 6 . This curve exhibits unchanging productivity until1 the last seven years when it has started increasing at about 1-J- per cent per year. This period is too short to establish a real trend; however, examination of trade practices indicates that this rate of increase may well be , maintained or increased. The roofing portion of the curve has been decreasing in productivity (see Appendix), but recent introduction of asphalt pumps, felt laying machines, electric hammers, and asphalt spreaders indicate the possibility of increased production. Paint technology is also improving, making application of paints much easier and more rapid. The spray paint operation has been with us for the entire forty years of the study, but technology is constantly improving and use of spray applications is becoming more widely accepted by the industry. The greatest deterent to this increase in productivity has been artificial prohibitions placed by unions on spray painting, brush size, and the like. The problem consists of applying 102 squares of ’’Type A ” I4. ply asphalt and gravel roofing to a wood roof surface. Sheetmetal work consists of 320 lineal feet of gutters and 8 I4. lineal feet of downspouts. Painting is 3 coat work on 20 Ton of steel, 2 coats on interior brick and , wood and 2 coats on steel sash, doors, and trim. All hand work was considered through the year 192-1-7 • Starting in 195Q
