........... 5 1 ; In general, productivity of the skilled hand crafts, j as carpentry and bricklaying, has been decreasing while common construction labor, such as hand excavation of foundation trenches, remains constant. It is in the area \ where productivity has benefited by increased mechanization that the real increase has been realized. This trend be^- comes most significant when the effect on the standard * building is observed. We have plotted the rate of change ' i of the six groups of trades concerned with this building in Figure 6 , page £0. These curves will be discussed individually in detail. Mechanization of Building Excavation The mechanization of the earth moving operation, as illustrated by Curve No. 1 of Figure 6 , page 5>0> has occasioned the largest manhour savings in the industry. Manhours shown are for the excavation of footing trenches and column footings and include backfill around the completed foundations and under the floor slab. 1917-1927» The pick and shovel were the tools of this period. Backfill was placed around footings by hand without tamping. Backfill under the slab was done using wheelbarrows for distribution of the fill. 1927-19)4-7. This is a transition period to complete mechanization in 1950. The trenching was still done by pick!
