Pacific Telephone utilizes formal training offered by colleges and universities to an appreciable extent in the training and development of its executives. It has sent some ten to twelve executives drawn from the third, fourth, and fifth levels of management to such courses each year. Advanced management courses at Dartmouth University, The University of California at Los Angeles, and Pomona College, California are regularly used. Companies of the Bell System with the cooperation of the University of Pennsylvania send twenty-four of their key executives to the campus each fall for ten months of continuous study. Two of Pacific Telephoned executives have been participating in this program each year. It is called the Institute of Humanistic Studies and was started at the University in 1953 at the suggestion of the president of the Bell Telephone Company cf Pennsylvania. The reasoning behind this program is that ten months of concentrated study in liberal arts will ’’broaden the viewpoint and enhance the stature and executive potential of promising young executives.”** 5Ibid.
