III. PURPOSE OF THE PLAN This Management Memo set the pattern for the company’s present plan of executive development. At its Ii inception the aim was to concentrate on preparing candidates for a limited number of top executive i positions, ' [gradually expanding to cover all executive jobs. The key I • i i |to the basic philosophy underlying this plan is its ! |I concept of individual differences. Not only are there jI wide differences in the requirements of the individual ; executive positions but, more important, is the difference I in experience, personality, training, and background which ^ characterizes each individual from any other individual. ■ For these reasons it is considered basic that individualized plans tailored to meet the specific needs of the | particular individual be designed for each candidate participating in the program. A second objective of the present plan is to develop several candidates for each executive position while, simultaneously, developing each candidate for more than one position. In order to reduce to a minimum the element of rivalry among executives, the plan provides that the competition for each top job will remain open
