40 work Monday, Wednesday, and Friday while an alternate works Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. This phase of the part-time program works rather well for the bank and the employee as well in other respects. For example, if one woman is ill, or goes on vacation, or even terminates employment, then the alternate fills in until another woman is hired and trained as a replacement. The transit and teller functions of the bank also utilize part-time employees. The transit department is organized to provide for sorting, routing, recording, sending, and collecting cash items.2 This department estimates its day-to-day volume approximately one month in advance and then, based on the estimates, utilizes part-time employees during evenings of peak work load periods. The transit function makes use of part-time employees approximately twelve evenings a month. Since the bank is open to the public on Saturdays, and the regular full-time staff has every other Saturday off, part-time, or Saturday only tellers are used to replace the full-time tellers on their day off. pAmerican Institute of Banking, Fundamentals of Banking (New York, 1950), p. 231.
