Ralph Vagner utilized the technique in developing an evaluation procedure for U«>S« Air Force officers. He discusses the advantages and how care must be exercised to obtain adequate results. He says (38;25): The Critical Incident Technique capitalizes on the advantage of behavior description of job requirement. But this advantage alone would not make the technique unique or circumvent certain other difficulties connected with the determination of job requirements. Summary— (1) Broad, ambiguous, and ill-defined terms are avoided by stating requirements purely in terms of what the individual must be able to do to be successful. (2) Objective evidence exists to support the critical nature of each requirement and a complete and exhaustive list can be obtained. (3) Basic data are provided which may be analyzed repeatedly to verify the underlying psychological traits found in original interpretations. (4) Stereotypical and unfounded lists of traits and characteristics are avoided. (5) Occupations not easily tried or observed personally by the psychologist can be studied by using the participant himself as an observer. (6) The method must be properly applied to be effective. (7) Descriptions must be confined to the behavioral level and avoid a natural tendency to interpret and evaluate. (8) Care must be used to describe the most recent incident and not a particularly unusual and a typical one.
