Object Description
Title | Francisco Sepulveda Junior High School, Los Angeles, 1984 |
Description | Francisco Sepulveda Junior High School, untitled mural, Los Angeles, 1984. Francisco Sepulveda Junior High School, 15330 Plummer Street (at Sepulveda Boulevard), Sepulveda. On the top row are six historical portraits, Columbus, Sepulveda, an early pioneer woman, a Native American man, an African American, and a woman. The small groups of students interacting on the bottom row appear so realistic that someone once called the police thinking they were vandals defacing the mural. Suriya came back in 1985 to do another mural with students inside the courtyard on campus. It portrays the ethnic diversity of the school's students. In 1992 artist Manuel Velazquez and students produced another multicultural-themed exterior mural. Designed by Thomas Suriya, painted by students under the direction of art teacher Lynn Hickey. -- Dunitz, Street gallery, p. 143, #34. |
