Two further volumes in a cupboard in the fourth floor corridor. Important, samples of illustrations (engravings and half-tone prints) from the Basel Mission Bookshop in the late 19th century, 156 pp., c.2000 pictures. See also Q-30.108, Q-30.109, Q-30.110 and, for Cameroon, Q-30.99."; Note: Das sog. (MS 06.1998).; Note translation: The pages of the "Sample Book" were photocopied, the individual images cut out, and then separated into collections relevant to the individual regions of Basel Mission activity (QA-30.001 China, QC-30.001 India, QD-30.001 Ghana, QE-30.001 Cameroon.) The remaining images were collected into files QQ-30.001 to QQ-30.010. The images were then filmed in this order. - The condition of the individual images was not noted. In the original Sample Book QQ-30.001 the paper has become brittle, but the print quality of the individual images is good. It was possible in 1998 to make photocopies with no loss of quality. NB the great bulk of the images are engravings, which lend themselves to being photocopied, and not half-tone plates. - Please note that "latest date" given for many pictures (1905) is conventional and very conservative. It is clear that some images were added to the Sample Bood as late as the 1890s. But we assume that by 1905 half-tone printing will have virtually have superceded the use of engravings, so that this year can be given as an absolute end-date. We can also assume that, broadly speaking, we have a collection of images as they were in use in the 1880s, but many will be older, and many will have been based on early photographs. The collection thus offers an interesting object for detailed study. (MS 06.1998, PJ 05.2001). - NB we need to check internally - have we an old AND a new Q-30.001? (PJ 05.2001). |
