Portrait of Samory, prisoner in N'Djolé, with his marabout and his son around him, his wives behind him and M. Dardenne and M. Lemercier, chief of the post of Ndjole, in Gabon.; Samory Ture was the founder of the Wassoulou Empire, an Islamic state that resisted French rule in West Africa from 1882. Captured in 1998, he was exiled to Gabon where he died in 1900. |
