An Original Cast Recording of a hit show is
always an event. And when the show is as
joyous as Don't Bother Me, I Can't Cope,
the event is super happy, for the music steps
right out and puts you center stage, in the best
seat in the house for this sassy and soulful
musical entertainment.
Don't Bother Me, I Can't Cope was written
and the music composed by Micki Grant,
and conceived and directed by Vinnette
Carroll. The play was originally staged by
Ms. Carroll in Washington for the Urban Arts
Corps and was performed in Philadelphia
and Detroit. Winner of two Obies (Best Music
and Lyrics for an Off-Broadway Musical
went to Micki Grant, Best Male Performance
in an Off-Broadway Musical went to Alex
Bradford) and the Outer Critics' Circle Award,
Don't Bother Me, I Can't Cope is a show that
comes on with a wide variety of stirring
music, from gospel to blues to rock and back
again, a show that has a message of love
and understanding throughout.
Reviews have been ecstatic, with raves
being heaped on Ms. Grant, Alex Bradford and
star-in-the-making Bobby Hill. Clive Barnes
of the New York Times said that the play is
"a mixture of a block party and a revival
meeting ... a charming and lively score ...
all in all, this is a fine cast in a show that
deserves a wide audience." T. E. Kalem,
writing in Time, said it all when he called
Don't Bother Me, I Can't Cope "the kind of
show at which you want to blow kisses."
