The ALLAN HANCOCK MONOGRAPHS IN MARINE BIOLOGY will consist of monographs in excess of fifty printed pages, in the fields of marine biology and paleontology. Only contributions from faculty and graduate students of the University of Southern California or papers substantially based upon the collections of the Allan Hancock Foundation will be considered for inclusion. Manuscripts should be submitted to the Chairman of the Hancock Foundation Publications Committee. All manuscripts will be submitted to specialists for scientific review. On approval of the Committee and the Director of the Foundation, the manuscripts will be edited and seen through the press by the Hancock editor. The author will receive ten copies free; additional copies may be purchased at cost if the order is received before the monograph is printed. Inquiries regarding prices and availability of back numbers of Hancock publications and orders should be addressed to Director, Allan Hancock Foundation, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, California 90007. The ALLAN HANCOCK MONOGRAPHS IN MARINE BIOLOGY follow the STYLE MANUAL FOR BIOLOGICAL JOURNALS, (American Institute of Biological Sciences) Second Edition, 1964, with the following exceptions-. Footnotes should be typed at the bottom of the page to which they belong. Initial capital letter may be used for a generic name except when it first appears in a section, or first appears after another generic name with the same initial letter has been used in the same paragraph. When co-authors represent different institutions, the name of each author should be followed by the name of his institution. Literature Cited: Use Name-and-year system. Type name of author, in proper form, at left hand side,- under it, indented four spaces, type the date, followed by the title and other relevant information. The author's name should not be repeated for each reference. Capitalize the first letter of each element in the abbreviation of the journal and use a period after the abbreviation. Use diacritical marks when they appear in the original reference. For book citations, the name of the publisher may be given, but is not required. Do not use bold face; use italics only when used in original reference. Names of books and periodicals in the text should be italicized. Names of taxa higher than the genus should not be italicized except for emphasis. Genus and species should be set in bold face when used as a heading; otherwise they are always set in italics. Do not use italics for legends for tables and figures, or for cross- references.
