SEWARD'S   DREAM.
[Mr. Seward is-said to be a social man and a
■good lawyer, but as a statesman he is evidently a

The Bight waB dark, tbe hour was late,
Tbe fire waa low in the parlor grate ;
Crouched ap in bis cozy Chair of State
Sat Seward fast asleep.
His friends bad goue—he'd done bis best
With wit and wine to please each guest—
Aud now he was taking a little rest,
And snoring loud and deep.
Oh! who shall say if some rebel freak
Had made his digestive organs weak,
Or bis stomach was hurt by some foreign cllqua.

Or whether it was the wine was rough,
Or he'd takeu a little more thau enough,
Or whether the steak was aocemmoaly tough —
Bai he dreamed a horrible dream !
Released from tb*e statesniau's iron chain,
He waB back to his Auburn home again ;
With joy he gazed through the window pane
On the grounds he loved to roam ;
Around him were youth and womanly grace,
And many a bright aud cherub face.
And be felt like a statesman out of place
Enjoying the charms of home.
"When suddenly came an infernal din
As if the walls and roof were tumbling in ;
An awful oath aud devilish grin,
And two fiends bestrode the floor.
The womeu shrieked with sore affright,
The children cried with all. their might,
Aud all that could, got out of sight,
Wherever tbey found a door.
And Seward backed aud kept aloof,
For his legal mind saw positive proof.
