Lager ttier : A Moral Lesson.
BY NtMIN'DOl..
I asked a doctor what he thought
Tha finest drink a brewer wrought?—
He answered thus : " Beyond a doubt,
'Tis Lager Beer I'
I asked a yellow-bearded man
About a street—and how it rau ?—
He ouly muttered, " Nix furstan."
Aud " Lager Beer.'
I asked a scholar-looking chap
What nectar was?—Quick as a snap
He said : " The true Olympian tap
Was Lager Beer!
I asked a tnoralint the way
To keep intemperance at bay—
•' There's only oue 'J—I heard him say—
" Drink Lwger Beer F'
" If you "—the Rage's sermon ran—
" Would be a i-ober, happy man,
Adopt at once this moral plan : —
Quit brandy tods, and whisky skins,
And those unmentionable sins
That dourisli in suburban inns ;
Take a good paper—{by the way,
The Post's the bestl—don't fail to pay—
And drink my health three times a day.
In Lager Beer!"

What puzzling creatures women are
In any way we take them—
When once they have made up their minds,
Vain are attempts to break them.
Ab well attempt to move the AlpB,
By human intervention,
Ab change a woman's fixed resolve,
Or alter her intention.
If we should love a beauteous maid
With fond a d true devotion,
And wish to raise within her heart
Reciprocal emotion—
Then thoughts of haw must in us rise,
And we our cards must shuffle,
So as to cause her no regrets,
Ner her sweet temper ruffle.
If she has faults, and we reprove,
We raise at once her ire ;
And fill'd Mith pride, she smothers up
Love's pure and holy lire.
If we are sad, then she is gay,
And smiles at all onr sorrow j
But when we laugh, then she will weep,
And griefs Irom fancy borrow.

Does the Mississippi: Run up Hill.—That's the
question, Dr, Boynton takes the affirmative, and
Horace Mann the negative. "Who shall decide
when Doctors disagree?" It is a fact that the figure of the earth is an oblate spheriod. leaving
its equatorial diameter more than twenty-six miles
longer than its polar diameter, and consequently
the equatorial regions are some thirteen mile?
further from the earth's centre than the poles are.
II the earth were at rest the water in tbe tropical
regions would flow with great rapidity towards
the poles, until the t quilibrium,as far as the water
is concerned, would be restored. The Mississippi
would flow from its mouth to ita source, the former being over two miles further from the centre
of the earth than tne latter. It is therefore evident that the water in this river, as it now flows,
rises or recedes from the earth's centre between
two or three milts, in passing from its source to
the Gulf of Mexxo.
" But how can water run up hill ?" asks Horace
Mann and others. For the same reason that water
on a grind stone in motion will mount the centre
ridge instead ol running off at the sides.. The revolution ofthe earth round its axis gives all bodies on its surface, especially water, a tendency to
the equator; and this tendency is sufficient to
counterbalance the rise in the surtace in the same
direction; in fact, one is the cause of the other.
Water is therefore free to flow in any direction
which inequalities on the surface, thus balanced,
may occasion. If the daily rotation ofthe earth
became slower, the tendency of hodies to the equator would diminish, and the water would How towards the poles, until another surface 'Or equilibrium was established. If the rotation became
more rapid then the water would rush towards the
equator until the equilibrium was restored. These
opposite forces, the centrifugal and centripetal
will always balance each other.
How Mr. Mann could be puzzled about so simple
a matter, is singular. . One would imagine that
the mind which could originate tbe idea of marrying a mau to twenty-five ladies of the modern
school without subjecting him to a charge of bigamy, would be able to comprehend a very simple
problem in natural philosophy.—Exchange.
From the Santa Barbara Gazette, we extract thc
following account of thc capture of three more of
tho gang of assassins, who have been infesting San
Luis Obispo county so long :■—
Oa Thursday last, the citizens were informed that
four or more of the band, including their captain,
Pio Linares, were concealed in a "monte," adjacent
to the residence ot Captain John Wilson, Rancho
de los Osos; when a numerous party of sifcty to
eighty armed men proceeded to the place, tthd were
posted in such a manner as to make It almost impossible for the robbers" to escape ; hut from the nature of the "monte," it was found that an entrance
could not be effected, and it wrb determined to lay
a regular siege to the place, surrounding It by an
armed cordon. For three days and three nights
thc robbers remained hidden without food ; but on I
Sunday morning, at an early houty diiveu by hun-1
ger or desperation, they endeavored to make -'a
brajke," the first in sight being the desperato Pio,
who immediately commenced firing his revolver,
wounding, we regret to learn, mortaliy, a Mr. -Slack-
an, of "Paso Kobles," ancl also Juan Tobaco,
ghtly ; but he soon fell, liis.body being perfectly
riddled with balls; thc others, Miguel Blanco and a
Sonorense, whose name we could not learn, surrendered, aud were carried to town, where, no doubt,
ere tluB, they shared the fate of their other compa-
ons.
The pursuit is kept up contioually for thc remnant of this ruthless band of assassins, whom, it iB
hoped, will soon pay the penalty of their numerous
and most atrocious crimen.
Imfortant Nkws from Central America.—The
Panama correspondent of the New York Times
mentions a report that an alliance, offensive and
defensive, has been entered into between Nicaragua, Salvador and Costa Rica, to which Guatemala and Honduras arc invited to become parties;
that a treaty has been made with France, by whicb
tnat power guarantees the independence of each
of the Central American States ; and that it was
determined to get rid, if possible, of all the transit contracts, and place the transit business dnder
the Bole control of Nicaragua and Costa Rica.
