latiou to tbe largest city in tbe world ; many confidently asserting that London, or, as it is frequent,
ly termed, tbe Great Metropolis, is far superior
both in size and number of inhabitants. But such
is not the case. Jeddo, the capital of Japan, is,
without exception, the largest and most populous
I city in tbe world. It contains tbe vast number of
1 500,000 dwellings and 5,ti00,00O of human souls.
Many of tbe streets are nineteen Japaneseries iu
length, whicb is equivalent to twenty-two English
miles. Tbe commerce of Japan far exceeds that
if any olher city in the world, and the sea along
ts coast is constantly white witb sails of ships.
"Tbeir vessels sail to the southern portion of tbe
Empire, where tbey are laden with rice, tea, sea-
coal, tobacco, silk, cotton and tropical fruits, all of
which find a ready market in the north ; and then
return freighted with com, salt, isinglass, and va -
rious other productions of the north, wbicb have a
market iu the south."—JVew York Argus.
In Wax.—Figures of Mason and Slidell have
been added to tbe famous wax collection of the
late Madame Tussaud in London. Tbe Saturday
Review says tbat " Mr. President Lincoln stands
scowling at tbem with an expression wbicb indicates at. once dyspepsia aud ferocity."
Tub Rebel Storehouse.—A good deal is said
ia tbe papers about Nassau. Itis tbe seat of governmeut of the Bahama Isles, located on the island
of New Providence, about 301) miles due east of
Key West, and a run of 500 odd miles S. S. E. of
Savannah. The place numbering 7,000 iubabi-
tnutsj intensely British in their sympathies.
The CHy authorities respect it,
Tbe District Courts and
Supreme Court of tbe
United States respect it.
Besides, the
Title has been forever quieted by a Final Decree
anil Judgment against the Cily.'
So that there is not even a cloud or shadow upon
it. Whoever purchases one of these lots will buy
a lot and not a lawsuit.

MEW 'GENERAL ORDER."
Taking of the Rebel Ram.
Orpheus C. Kerr, being impressed with the magnanimous policy the Government has adopted in
regard to the rebels, places the last General Order on file iu the New York Mercury. He visits
(he Mackerel Brigade and meets the inevitable
Captain Villiam Brown.
" How now, my Jack of Spades V says I, sport-
ively.
" Ab 1" says Villiam, slowly descending from
the roof of hia stallion, and suffering the latter to
lean against a tree, " here is anew Proclamation
lor the moral refreshment Cf the United States of
America. Read this impartial edick. says Villiam
impressively, " and you will flud it worthy of the
Union Track Society."
I took the official parchment, my boy, and found
inscribed upon it the following affecting
GENERAL ORDER.
Whereas, The United States of America now
finds himself engaged in au uo natural struggle
with the celebrated Southern Confederacy, for the
Union which our forefathers planted ; and it being
our object to show the world that our intensions
are houorable ; it ia hereby ordered, that the
Mackerel Brigade do take possession of all guns,
pistols and howitzers pteviously fired at them by
persons now in arms against this Government,
keeping strict account of said weapons, in order
that their owners may be duly and amicably paid
for them hereafter. It is further ordered that persons of Mackerel descent, occupying the cultivated
grounds ofthe aforesaid Southern Confederacy,
shall keep a strict account ol the time sfrent upon
the same, in order that reasonable rent maybe
paid for the same as soon as the Uuited States of
America shall resume specie payment.
By order of
Tue General ov the Mackerel Brigade.
Gkken Seal 1
VlNTAGIfi of 1776. f
Having perused this document with much attention, I handed it back to Villiam, and says I:
" Iu purity of moral tone, my hero, that paper
is worthy the descendants of 1776."
"17761" says Villiam, reflectively. "Ah!"'
says Villiam, " it takes strategy to revive recollec
tions of those days. We have at least seventeen
hundred and seventy sick ones in our new hospital
already. Come with me," eays Villiam, genially,
" and we will survey the interior aspeck of Strategy null."
Strategy Hall, my boy, is a fine airy hospital extemporized Irom a barn, on the estate of a prominent Southern Union niao, now commanding a
regiment of Confederacies. Tho house itself would
bave been laken, as it haa Bomewhat more roof
thaa the barn, and a little more shade ; but when
the General ol the Mackerel Brigade learned that
Washington had ouce thought of taking a second
mortgage on it, he gave orders lhat no Mackerel
should go within half a mile ofthe frontdoor.
On entering Strategy Hall, I beheld a scene
calculated to elevate sickness into a virtue, and
shed immortal lustre upon the kind-hearted women of America. Comfortably stretched upon
rails taken from Confederate fences, and of which
a strict account had been kept, with a view to future compensation, were a whole section of tbe
Mackerel Brigade, in the full enjoyment of strategic health. Over each chap's head hung his
shovel, and a shingle inscribed with his name and
address. Thus, the shingle nearest to me read :
■' Spooney Bill, Hose Company 123, New York
Fire Department."
Having quitted Strategy Hall I repaired to the
shore of Duck Lake, where numerous. Mackerels
were already watching Commodore Head's fleet as
it lay watching for an expected rebel ram on the
treacherous element. It appeared that a lurking
Confederacy in Paria had waited uutil thi; Mackerels wero alt in their boles, one day. aud then
hastily constructed an iron-plated ram from an
old drygoods box and two cooking stoves. Witb
this formidable monster, he designed offering irregular opposition to the Government iu the way
of killing a few vandal regiments, after which he
proposed to repair to the Confederate side of Duck
Lake, and send the particulars of his victoiy to
Europe through some of lhe more vigilantly blockaded Southern ports. He had completed his ram,
my boy, and hidden it under some hay on the
shore, ready to commence his carnage when the
time came ; but one of the Mackerels happened to
see it wheu ho was fishing, and Commodore Head
was at ouce ordered to have his iron-plated squad
ron in readiness to intercept and destroy the mon"
ter when she should appear.
"Riddle my turret !" says the Commodore, in
his marine manner, as he sighted his swivel gun
and placed his fishing-rod and box of biiit near
his stool on the quarter-deck, " I feel like grappling with half a dozen rams of chivalry—loosen
my plates, il I don't.;'
And there we stood on that hot July afternoon,
watching the noble craft as she sat like a duck in
the water, the Mackerel crew sittingalt picking a
marrow bone, aud the venerable Commodore tilted
back on his stool upon tbe quarter-deck, fishing
for buss.
Presently we could see the treacherous Confederacy stealing dowu to where his iron-plated monster lay hidden. Softly he removed the covering
of hay, and cautiously did he place the ram in the
water, carefully examining the priming of the old
c ... _«.«•»». ..asuniicti LiLKitti" uis arm, as
he stepped into this new Merrimac, and quietly
raising his umbrella with one hand, while he paddled off with the other.
The distance between onr fleet and the spectators being fully two yards, Villiam had thought
fully provided bits of smoked glass for our party
and we now brought them to bear upon lhe scene
of appraching slaughter. The Mackerel crew ou
board our squadron appeared tobe wholly absorbed
in the pleasing experiment of following, with a
straw, the motions of a lly whose wings he had
Just pulled off, and Commodore Head had fallen
iuto a refreshing slumber in lhe midst of his fishing. In fact no means had beeu left unemployed
to guard against- a surprise.
Now, it happeued tbat the nautical Confederacy
did his paddling with his back to the bow of his
iron-plated monster, and before he knew it, hi;
ram went smack agaiust the Mackerel fleet, with a
sound like the smashing of many dinner plates.—
So tremendous was the shock, that the stool upon
wliich Commodore Head was tilted, gave way beneath his weight, and he came down upon lhe
deck with a crash like muffled thunder. Simultaneously, the Confederacy discharged his blunder,
bus two points to windward, and would have followed up his advantage by boarding at ouce ; but
by this time the Mackerel crew had recovered his
presence of miud, aod poured such a shower upon
the intruder from a watering pot which he found
in tbe stern-sheets, that the latter retieated in
great disorder.
Meanwhile, our gallant old naval hero bad regained his feet, and having carefully put away his
Ashing tackle aud box of bait, he made his appearance on the starboard, with his spyglass under one
arm, his speaking trumpet under tbe other, and his
log-book between his teeth.
No sooner did the now thoroughly exasperated
Confederacy behold his venerable figure, than he
hastily shut up his umbrella and violently cracked
bim over the head with it, knocking off his spectacles, aud greatly damaging hia new white hat.
"Batter my armor!" thundered the Commodore,
picking up his spectacles, and bending them
straight again. "I don't want you to do that
human cry. Jt approached nearer. We could distinguish words. Nearer and nearer. The worda
now came clearer and distinct to our quickened

Since newspapers have become so plentiful in
this once distracted country, my boy, that even
the babe chews them upou its mother's lap, the
poorest man is enabled to see instantaneously,
through a glass as it were, the most distant events
—a glass, my boy, which makes things appear
much larger at a distance than they seem to those
close by. Yours, admiringly,
Orpheus C. Kbbr.
" Scorpion 1" roared the Confederacy, droppiug
hia umbrella, and dancing up and down in his
ram, with bis arms iu a boxing attitude. "Come
on, base old being I"
" Then take thy doom ?'' shrieked the maddened
Commodore, quickly striking a match on the bottom of one of his boots, aud touching off the swivel
gun. With a report like the explosion ofa deadly pistol, the trusty weapon buried ils contents
about two inches ahove the Mackerel crew, wildly
tearing off the cap of the latter, aad Bhaking the
staunch craft from stem to stern.
Somewhat alarmed by this demonstration, the
Confederacy commenced shoving off with his ram,
using bis bbtnderbus and umbrella as oars, and
singing the Southern Marseillaise.
" Out with the aealls and give chase !■' ejaculated Commodore Head, in a great perspiration. It
was found, upon examination, that ihe sculls hud
been left on shore, and it was further discovered
that the Mackerel fleet was aground; otherwise
our victory would have been more complete.
With eyes strained to the utmost, we were gazing upon aU this from the beach, wben Villiam
suddenly placed a hand upon

Dear Vanity :—Me and McClellan bas got at

Keep dark.
The enemy met us" in superior force as usual.
We repulsed them at all points, and retrented
towards Richmond, extending onr lines to within
a rod and a half of the city.
The rebels made a furious attack upon our position in the Cbickahominy swamps, and took every
thing they found there.
They then pushed on, and after a desperate
struggle—through the swamps—they succeeded io
reaching the White House, killing and capturing
all the soldiers in the place.
There were'nt any soldiers in the place.
On this they attacked the rear of my artny,
still retreating, and rapidly nearing Richmond.
Hero they took all they could get.
It was a thrashing.
I rode, dear Vanity, upon a little dapple-grey
cock horse, the gift of Lou. Napoleon. I rode at
the head cf my troops, with a rose in my mouth,
occasionally humming the Ilallelooyer chorus or
swearing at my staff. I am an awfnl fellow, I tell
you. We newspaper correspondents always are-

The euemy then executed some very fine maneuvers.

And all is for the best.
My poor Eleventh Regulars were all cut to
pieces, though they fought like men and soldiers,
every oue of them. Brave boys ! They were the
'Leven that saved the whole lump,
I just uow heard an odd conversation between
two officers of my staff. One is a young Lieutenant of Light Quadroons, who was with me in Italy.
"When the enemy made bis first attack,' re-
arked the young Lieutenant, " I was with the
General on a hill. The shot came very close, and
I turned to McAroue"—
" Turned to maccaroni, did you?" broke in tha
other ; "you don't say so. Well, do you know, I
felt, just then, aa if I wbs turning ts milk aud

that there was some very good fighling done by
General Washington iu the Revolution—Vanity
Fair,
A Faithful Don os the Battle Field.—Lieut
Pfieff, killed at the battle ol Shiloh, was buried at
Chicago. In speaking of the funeral, the Time*
of that city remarks :—
A beautiful and touching incident is connected
with the manner in which Mrs. I'fieilF waa enabled
to discover the place where her husband had been
buried upon the battle field. She visited the field,
armed with a pass from General Halleck, but no
one could inform her of the place where he had
been buried, as such a large number, of both friend
and foe, had been iuterred upon the same ground.
She remained about hall a day, and was about
giving up in despair, wheu she espied, at thedis-
tauce of nearly half a mile, a large dog coming
rapidly towards her, which ehe immediately recognized as the same which had accompauied ber
husbaud to the war. He approached her with tha
most intense manifestations of joy, and immediately indicated to ber, as well as he was able, his desire (hat she should follow him. She did so, aud
he led the way to a distant part ofthe field, and
stopped before a siugle grave. She caused it to
be opened, aud theq; found the body of ber dead
husbaud. It appears from the statement of some
of the soldiers, that at the time Lieut. Pfieff fell
this dog was by his side, and there remained, licking his wounds, uutil he was taken from the field
aud buried. He theu took his station by the
grave, and nothing could induce him to abandon
it but for a sufficient length of time ca;h day to
satisfy his hunger, until, by some means, he waa
made aware of the presence of his mistress. Tbua
had he watched for twelve days by the grave of
his slain master. This is certainly one ot the moet
wondeiful instances of canine sagacity on record.
When the body wan being conveyed to tbis city
this wouderlul animal took up bis position by tho
box containing the remains, and no persuasions
could induce him to leave it until ils arrival here.
