And that's a snow-white stccking
So nea' and clean.

To you to vote,
What Gray once wrote,

The lasting theme

And"never wants you long.
By Plato ne'er

Yet still I vow
There's magic now
About a woman's foot,

The Representative from (Ininil .'on .
" In early days, old Nat Harrison was elected
to the Legislature from this county," paid an old
fellow, as we were seated around the littie hotel
at McLanesborough, Hamilton county, Illinois.
"Old Nat was a regular brick—he was elected
just because there was no one to run la oppositi
to him. Our couuty was bad off for intelligent
people iu those days. A few days after eld Nat
had gone to Springfield, to attend to the duties of
his office, I happened to be there also, on some
businees of a private character, and thinking he
would be glad to hear from the folk*, at home, I
concluded to call on him at the "Prairie," and
inquire after hit* health.
" I've been well, Tom," Baid he, " but I got
awfully scared the first night I stayed in this
darned place."
"How was that?" I inquired.
" Well," said Nat, "I'll tell you about it. You
see that fellow behind the countei1—the tellows
here call him the host—well, I told him I wanted
to see my bed, so I'd know where to sleep when
I'd come in after a while. He took me up stairs
to a iittle room, and said I could sleep there, and
then he went down. I took good notice of it—
biown door with yellow streaks here and there
and a white airlhcn lock-handle I started down
a-thinkin'about this, and I wouldn't look at no
other door, (or fear I'd kinder get 'em mixed np
in my bead, and forget which was mine,"
"About twelve o'clock that night, I came in
with a half growin' hummin' iu my head, aud the
first thing I found at the top of the stairs was my
own identical door, with the yellow streaks and
the white lock-handle. Good. sayB I, and in I
lumbers. I walks up to tbe bed and what do yon
think? Wby, I found one of your long-legged'
black-whiskered town fellows in it, fast asleep,
I takes him by Lhe beard, rears him up on his end,
and gives him a short sarmtn'; tells him to leave
as quick as double triggers, or I'd be cussed if I
wouldn't kick him down stairs ; tells him I dou't
want to do it nuther, for I was a member of the
Legislature, tbe Representative from Hamilton,
but if I got to fighting he'd find me to be a full
team.
The fellow looked awfully scared, and without
saying a word got up, very humble like,, and
started for hia dry goods, which hung on a chair
iu one corner. I sot down Ihe light aDd began to
undress ; and says I to htm, draw on them dud,
and toddle from here, or I'll be darned if I ,
(turning round to look fierce at him) sees him
a-comin' at me with one ofthe dod drodest butcher
knives in the world. Well, thought I, Nat you've
got yourself into a light place, by jingo ! and so
we began to lumber around the room like tbe very
nation. Here I went, and here he came. Al last
I got between him and the door aud ont I shot.
This beats all,'-' said I, "Representatives of
tbe Legislature treated in this way. I went down
stairs and told the feller behind the counter that
some cuss was in my room."
No, I guess not," aaid he, "perhaps there is
some mistake ; your's is No. 8."
" Thinki I perhaps there may be some mistake.
aud so I goes back. Wben I got up to the top of
the stairs I begun to count at the first door, until
I had counted eight. I found that they all looked
just exactly alike. I opened the eighth door and
went in. feeling certain that was the one picked
out for ine. A candle was burning on the table,
by the light of which I saw that some person was
in bed. Not feeling inclined to kick up another
muss, 1 concluded to crawl in witb him and say
nothing about it. In a very short time I was in
bed and leady to go to sleep. I had not been in
bed'long before the door opened, aud a young
man and woman came into the room and took
seats by the candle-stand.
"Something on hand, Nat," thought I lo myself, "but let'em rip."
"They looked very serious at first, but it finally
wore oft; and they got to chattin' very lovingly,
and hoggin.' and kissin" a little. I was delighted
with the performance, and thought the feller in
bud with me ought lo see it and enjoy the fun
too; sol whispered to him:
'* Say Captain—old hossjust look up.-'
"Tiny both started up likea ;leciriciiy shockin'

fully Feared, till the gal Baid it was only the wind
blowing agin the winder.
They soon got to huggin and kissin' again, and
as I could not rouse my liieud I thought I'd just
have a little fun to myselt. " Slips !" says I, -'as
ihey were fetching tlieir lips together and up they
Bprung like lighinin', and sloped tor the door, but
■ .,8 loiiune would bave it, the young fellow dropped
1 the key aud couldn't get out.
" Never mind," said 1, " it's tun tor me as well
ns for you. I love to eCa things go on."
■■ Tbis seemed to scare ihem more than ever. I*
Was rich—too rich to enjoy alone, and 1 determined to wake my bedle'Ilow. I slapped bin on tbe
cfi!ti---H wn; coid as ice.
" Thunder and £& £<nils, Nal," said 1, " you're
in bednitb a dead man, and without waiting lo
consider the mfiUerT sprung to the floor. The
youngsters gave a lotld ffjlull, fetched ngin the
door, and I pitched with them which resulted in
amashin' the darned thing open. Wiibout waiting for any formalities we all bollr.d for thestairs.
Hearing the rocket, the landlord, who occupied a
room further back, came bolting after ub. Catching a glimpse of him 1 took him lo be the dead

"Now let's take something, old hosa," said
Nat, '■ but don't say anything about wben you
get home, or daily may be uneasy about me."

A Sao Reveksk.—John Pocock Holma, who
had beeu a distinguished British surgeon, died
lately in Evansville, Ind., at the age of eighty
years, destitute and friendless. One of his eyes
had been destroyed by cancer, and one of hiB legs
paralysed. On examining his effects after his
death, was found an original certificate of Sir
Ashley Cooper, testifying to his qualifications as
a surgeon, with numerous testimonials from other
eminent surgeons of his ability and faithfulness as
a member of tlie profession. It appeared from
other papers that be had been, previous to 1-827,
sixteen years a surgeon in the employ of tha Hudson Bay Company, at their various posts on this
continent, in 1827 he was a practising sdrgeon
in London, holding intercourse with the most
eminent men. Amonn- the papers he appears to
have preserved with care, is a card of invitation
from the lord mayor and mayoress of London to
dine at the Mansion House, on the 1-2th of May.
tbe year omitted. But tb* papera which he seems
to have deemed the most precious are a package
Of letters from Capt. Parry, the great Arctic explorer, with whom he seems to have enjoyed a
free and cordial intimacy. Among bis effects
were olso two liirje and beautiful gold medals
awarded to " Doctor John Pocock Holms by med"
ical societies for bis valuable inventions of obstetrical and surg.cal instruments." He was evidently a man of correct habitb and great intelligence. By what misfortunes he who had enjoyed
high professional reputation, and had been the associate and friend of eminent men, was left homeless aad poor, ond died at last alone in the shady
of a poor negro nurse, is unknewn. It is a pain-
lul lesson of the sad vicissitudes of life.
Decayed Aristocrats.—A curious study has
been hiade concerning the decay of soma great
Huropeau families, and the result is most ridicu'
lous and sublime. A Duchess de Saint Simon is a
femme ce menage at Beleville ! The history ol
her decay is most woaderful. The heir oi the
last doge of Venice is a perfumer at' St. Denis.
Tbey keys of Venice, gilt with care, confided to
the hereditary keeping of the family, repose beneath a glass shade on the mantel piece in his
back shop. The Ceptal de Buch, a unique title.
one .of the oldest in France, is a little actor on little wages at the theatre of Beaumarchais, and the
grand-daughter of a Duchess de San Severino
woiks by the day at a fashionable milliner's. We
may add to the above tbat the sole descendant of
tbe beautiful Aisse, who was asked in marriage by
the Prince de Conde, earns a pittiful living at
Chaillot! On a'lons nous ?
While Miss Chester was at York, tone evening'
having to pei form a serious scene of Lady Town
ley. in the comedy of the " Provoked Husband,-"'
she was observed between the 4lb and oth acts, in
a rathtr retired part behind the wings, sobbing
aud moaning and beating her bosom iu a most unusual manner for an actress not en scene. One
of the actors very kindly asked btr the cause of
the g'-tef bo painfully expressed ; she replied not
i nods, but motioned hfm to begone, and then
glied and moaned more enthusiastically and vociferously than before. The good-natured actor,
alarmed at a pretty woman's grief, entreated her
to retire to her dressing room, and let the other
ladies assist in consoling ber ; on which she suddenly suspended her tones of grief, and snappish'
ly OMlaimpd.
Go along, sir ; leave me—for I am working
up my feelings for the last scene."
This became a by-word and a jest among the
frequenters of the green room.

Tiie Effects of Mooxlighy.—Professor Piazza
Smyth, tbe astronomer royal of Scotland, in his
interesting account of a recent scientific expedition made by him to the Peak of Teneriffe, has set
at rest tbe vexed cjuesiion ofthe heat ofthe moonlight. He says that hia therraomelrical instruments were sensibly affected by the moon's rays,
even at tbe lowest of two stations occupied by
him at different elevations. In tropical climates
it which is exposed to the moonlight rapidly
becomes putrid ; and in the Indies, the negroes
who will lie sweltering and uncovered beueath
the full glare of a tropical sun, carefully muffle
their heads and faces when exposed (o the moonbeams, which they believe will cause swelling and
distortion of the features, and sometimes even
