The Modern Belle.
The daughter sits in the parlor,
And rocks on her easy chair,
She is dressed in silks and satins,
And jewels are in her hair ;
She winks, and giggles, and simpers,
And simpers, and ('ingles, and winks;
And though she talks but little,
It's vastly more thau she thinks.
Her father goes clad in russets—
All dirty and seedy at that;
His coat is out at the elbows,
And he wears a shocking bad hat.
He is hoarding and Baving his dollars,
So carelully day by day,
While she, ou her whims and fancies,
Is squandering them away.
She lies in bed of a morning
Until the hour of noon,
Then comes down snapping and snarling,
Because she's called too soon!
Her hair is still in papers,
Her cheeks still dabbled with paint—
Remains of last night's blushes,
Belore she attempted to faint.
Her feet so very little,
Her hands so very white,
Her jewels so very heavy,
And her head so very light;
Her color is made of cosmetics.
Though ihis she',1 never own ;
Her body is mostly colton,
And her heart is wholly stone.
She falls in love with a fellow
Who swells with a foreign air ;
lie marries her lor her money,
She marries him for his hair.

Both are well matched in life;

The British Parliament re-assembled on the 12th
April, bnt nothing of importance had taken place,
although some highly interesting remarks were
made in reference to the new passport system of
France, the English plan of enlisting soldiers iu
Africa for service in India, and the naval estimates. Lord Derby's government, generally supported by the Commons, has determined to keep
up au efficient Channel fleet, in imitation, as asserted, of Napoleon's armament at Toulon.
Marshal Pelissier, the new French ambassador
to London, bad arrived there, ami was received by
Queen Victoria, Hi3 reception at Dover and
other places was most flattering.
France was quiet, and the Emperor had gone on
visit to his farm at Solone.
Government had named its candidates for the
vacant seats in the Legislative body, from Paris.
The opposition candidates, with bnt one excep
tion, had refused au invitation to visit the Tuili.

The Government bill, asking for the sum of
180 000,000 francs, for improvements in Paris,
was warmly opposed in the Legislature.
The relations between Naples and Sardinia
growing out of tho Cagliari affair, were very

The English Government had withdrawn all
the charges remaining on record against Dr. Bernard, and retired from the prosecution. Au impressive scene took place in court when be was

loudly cheered on going to their homes. The
verdict is applauded by most ofthe British press ;

at Paris.
The Atlantic cable was being rapidly put on

The dates from Bombay are tb the 18th ultimo.
Previous to that date the British troops had made
their grand attack upon Lucknow, and the city
had fallen. The rebels had fled from their stronghold in the greatest disorder, and were hotly pursued by the British cavalry and artillery. There
was uot much hard fighting at the capture, and'
Ihe losses were light, the rebels making but
feeble resistance. At the latest advices the whole
eity was in possession of the British. There had
been quite a panic in Calcutta in consequence of
a wide-spread fear of an outbreak among the natives, bnt it had turned out to have been unfounded.
Further advices from India state that order was
beginning to bo restored in Lucknow under Sir
Colin Campbell. Major Hodson, who captured
the King of Delhi, was killed at the storming of
Lucknow. The rebels were still in great force in
Bundlecund. The territory of the Rajah of Ban-

Louisiana—The New Orleans True Delta gives
the following summary of intelligence :
We have nothing out of the usual routine to re.
port in city matters, unless it he the conviction of
four murderers in the First District Court, two oi
whom—Lindsay aud Haas—are to be hung, and
the other two—Logan and Wright—to be eeut to
the penitentiary for life.
The crevasse opposite the city, which was noticed in our Inst, has defied ail efforts to check its
progress, and the waters of the Mississippi are
still pouring through it aud in increased volume
and force, submerging the whole country irom
Gretna to the Bali ze.
We regret to add that the breaks in the levees
aud disasters by the flood are not confined to the
vicinity of New Orleans. The latest advices from
above represent the rivers as still rising, and several fearful breaks are reported, and an immense
extent oi couutry is overflowed, causing incalculable damage to the planting interest.
The Twiggs Co«rt-T*I»vtInl at Newport Bai-
The Court-Martial, ordered to convene at Newport (.Kentucky) Barracks, for the trial of Major
General David E. Twiggs, met on the 29th April.
On that day, the Court being full, the case was
opened, when the defendant objected to Colonel
Fauntleroy sifting as a member, on the ground oi
former differences between the parties. Colonel
Fauntleroy responded, that some years ago there
had been differences between himself and General
Twiggs, growing out of their official relation, but
that he had longsince discarded them. He would,
however, regret all his life if a decision adverse to
Geu. Twiggs should be made by the Court, of
whicli he was a member, and, therefore, he would
respectfully ask permission of the Court to withdraw. Subsequently, Colonel Fauntleroy recorded his reasous for withdrawing.
Permission was accorded to the Colonel, and
fhe charge against Gen. Twiggs was read, with
the specifications. The charge ia " insubordinate
conduct, to the prejudice of good order aud military discipline."
Witnesses for defence testified that Gen. Twiggs
meant no contempt for the President The case
was closed for defence on Friday, 30th, and goes
to the War Department for revision ofthe verdict.

The hark Live Yankee, Capt. Wiggin. arrived in

the command of Col. Steptoe, on Snake river, had
been attacked by a large ludian force, who were
compelled to retreat after a desperate conflict, iu
which Col. Steptoe lost three officers nnd' fifty
men killed. We give the news as received, but
can scarcely credit the result as reported. The
readers ofthe Herald will recollect a letter, published May 17th, stating that the Cheteo. Sixes,
Rogue River, Port Oxford Indians, and the Indians on the Reservation, were about celebrating a
grand union of their forces to drive away the
whites in that region of country, and it is by nc
means unlikely that an outbreak of a seriouschar-
