About ten yean ago, a paragraph appeared in j pear]a to deck tby raven hair—thou shalt have all

of an inquest held on tbo body oi a young nomas, j will wor8hi5 t_.e ever I When shall we be one,

that uproar? This, ma'iti, is my leisure, with noise
enough to wake the dead! Confound those children !—but I'll make them quiet! Exeunt Wag-
staff and madam,
' found dead" in some obscure street cr lane in
London. The body was discovered (rightfully
emaciated, scantily clothed, nnd lu a poor garret
which was entirely destitute of every article of
furniture, com Tort or otherwise, except a few
ragged love-lettera which she had preserved
through every privation. According to tbe evidence, she had been at some time a person of
considerable beauty, aud bad evidently died oi'
hunger.
'Twas on a dark December evening,
Loud the blast and bitter cold :
Downward came the whirling waters,
Deep aud black the river rolled ;
Not a dog beneath the tempest—
Not a beggar upon liis lie.it ;
Wind and rain, eold and darkness.
Swept through every desert street.
Muffled to tlie teeth lhat evening
I was struggling in the storm,
Thro' pestilent lanes and hungry alloys j
Suddenly an ancient (©TBI
Peered Out Prom out a gloomy doorway,
And with trembling croak, it said—
"In the left hand empty garret
Yon will Iind a woman dead.
" No ver stepped a finer creature,
When she was a simple maid :
But thi: did like many other—
Lov'd a man and was betrayed :
I have semi her in her carriage
Riding, dhvnonds in her hair :
And I've seen her etervUig—(starving, _
Do you hear?) and now—she's there.'"
Up the worn and elippcry stair
With a quickened pulse I sprung :
Famine, firth and mean despair
Round about the darkness hung }
No kind vision met my glances,
Friend or helper of the poor ;
So the crazy room 1 entered,
And looked dowu upon the floor.
There, on the rough and naked boards.
A long, gaunt, wasted figure lay,
Murdered In its youth by hunger,
All its beauty—wrinkled clay.
Life's poor wants ha i left her nothing,
Cloth es nor fuei—food nor bed.
Nothing—save some ragged letters,
Whereon lay the ghastly head.
Nothing I—yet what more could pity
Crave, lor one about to die.
Than sweet words from on; who wor.-bippjd,
(Sweel, though every word a lie!)
In the morning ot her pleasure,
In the midnight of her pain,
They were alt her wealth, her comfort,
Treasured—ay, and not in vain.
And with ber now they lie mouldering,
And a date upon a stone
Telleth where (to end the i-dory)
Love'.-, poor outcast sleeps alone.
Mourn not ; for at length she steepelh
The soft slumber of the dead,
Resting on loved love-letters-
Last fit pillow for her heed.
Bakky Cornwall.

Of course, we do not publish thu following a?
endorsing tho Hentiiceut—ai: all, at all—but merely
for its poetical merit. Our devil, though, suggests
the possibility of there being as much truth as
poetry in it. We do not know its origin :
"Tbe frown of woman—'tis a fearful thing;
The wit of woman—shield rue horn its sting ;
'fhe faith of woman—fragile as hex glass;
Tiie lace of woman—mercury and brags*.
The charms of woman—serve to lead astray ;
The eye of woman—dazzling but to slay ;
Tbe bead of woman—with strange vagaries filled ;
The luve of woman—thousands it hath killed ;
The youth of woman—fbolism, siag-song dreBS ;
The age of woman—scolding, fret fulness ;
The smiles of woman—harbingers of guile ;
The tears of woman—chiefly crocodile's ;
The heart of woman—flinty, ruthless, cold ;
The baud of woman—bought with land and gold ;
The heels of woman—they who are wise will shun ;
Tha nails of woman—oft they've made men run ;
The tongue of woman—'tis hung in the middle ;
The wrath of woman—now I'll hung up my fiddle."

The omission Of the name of the State from
the address of a letter, often causes much uncertainty in its motions.
There are, for iestauce, seven Philadalphias besides ihe one in Pennsylvania,twenty-three Salems,
as many Troys, and no end of Yvashingtons, J'ei-
feraenR, and other names distinguished in tbe
history oftlie country,
Tbere are three New Torks, and eleven Bos-
tone. Indeed tbe majority of tbe mines of tiie
post offices are at least duplicated., and often repeated many tini's. as. wc could easily show ; but
twe or.three more specimens of tins will suffice.
Twenty-three Franklins, twenty Jacksons, and
sixteen Madisoos, will help to perpetuate ibe memories otthe dieting uished men who once bore
these names.
The danger of a letter's miscarrying tn COBSe-
euence of the omission of the name ol tho State
on Jt»dirt*c'jion, ieofcouri? redaced to nothing.
"That is the person," said ihe, iadicatlng him

Tills direct charge and these threats, produced
a greater coin motion among bis fellow-olej ki
than in the mind of the gentleman accused,
Waiting for a moment after Bhe had spoken, he
broke the breathless silence that followed inn-
words, by saying calmly,—"BrJ. , f be-

'•That's my name, .sir."
"Have you concluded your remarks, madam!"
'■! have, sir. I'or the present."
"Then, madam, I will take the liberty to inform you that your husband is the person on
whom you ought to expend your indignation.

Tlm lady did not reply to this proposition, but
made a precipitate retreat, leaving the olerk mas
ter oi the li :ld, and was never afterwards seen at
tbat post-office.

Ha! what'-*. that uproar? This, ma'iti, is my leisure, with noise enough to wake the dead! Confound those children !—but I'll make them quiet! Exeunt Wag- staff and madam, ' found dead" in some obscure street cr lane in London. The body was discovered (rightfully emaciated, scantily clothed, nnd lu a poor garret which was entirely destitute of every article of furniture, com Tort or otherwise, except a few ragged love-lettera which she had preserved through every privation. According to tbe evidence, she had been at some time a person of considerable beauty, aud bad evidently died oi' hunger. 'Twas on a dark December evening, Loud the blast and bitter cold : Downward came the whirling waters, Deep aud black the river rolled ; Not a dog beneath the tempest— Not a beggar upon liis lie.it ; Wind and rain, eold and darkness. Swept through every desert street. Muffled to tlie teeth lhat evening I was struggling in the storm, Thro' pestilent lanes and hungry alloys j Suddenly an ancient (©TBI Peered Out Prom out a gloomy doorway, And with trembling croak, it said— "In the left hand empty garret Yon will Iind a woman dead. " No ver stepped a finer creature, When she was a simple maid : But thi: did like many other— Lov'd a man and was betrayed : I have semi her in her carriage Riding, dhvnonds in her hair : And I've seen her etervUig—(starving, _ Do you hear?) and now—she's there.'" Up the worn and elippcry stair With a quickened pulse I sprung : Famine, firth and mean despair Round about the darkness hung } No kind vision met my glances, Friend or helper of the poor ; So the crazy room 1 entered, And looked dowu upon the floor. There, on the rough and naked boards. A long, gaunt, wasted figure lay, Murdered In its youth by hunger, All its beauty—wrinkled clay. Life's poor wants ha i left her nothing, Cloth es nor fuei—food nor bed. Nothing—save some ragged letters, Whereon lay the ghastly head. Nothing I—yet what more could pity Crave, lor one about to die. Than sweet words from on; who wor.-bippjd, (Sweel, though every word a lie!) In the morning ot her pleasure, In the midnight of her pain, They were alt her wealth, her comfort, Treasured—ay, and not in vain. And with ber now they lie mouldering, And a date upon a stone Telleth where (to end the i-dory) Love'.-, poor outcast sleeps alone. Mourn not ; for at length she steepelh The soft slumber of the dead, Resting on loved love-letters- Last fit pillow for her heed. Bakky Cornwall. FOE SALE, THE E.VTIUE KSTAl*.Ll* |
