The American Girl.
Our hearts are with onr native land.
Our song is for her glory :
Her warrior's wreath is in our hand,
Onr lips breathe out her glory.
Her lofty bills aud valleys green,
Are shining bright before us I
And like a raiubow sign is seen
Her proud flag waving o'er us.
And there are smiles upon her lips
For those who meet our foereieu ;
For glory's star knows no eclipse,
When smiled upou oy women.
For those who brave tbe mighty deep
And scorn the threat of danger,
We've mriles to cheer, and tears to weep
For every ocean ranger.
Our hearts are with our native land,
Our song* are for her freedom ;
Our prayers are tor the gallant band
Who strike where honor leads them ;
Who love the taintless air we breathe,
(Tis freedom's endless dower )
We'll twine for him an endle-s wreath
Who i-corns a tyrant's power.
They teh me ot France's beauties fair,
Of Italy's proud daughters ;
Of Scotland's lassie*—England"* fair,
And "yinphs of Sharon'^ waters
We need not boast their haughty charms,!
Though lord* around them hover,
Onr glory lies in trt-edom's arms—
A rRKilMAN lor a lover.
Young Genius.
Mf. D'Israeli has, in his Coningsby, this striking passage :
" Genius, when young, is divine. Why. the
greatest captains ot ancient snd modern times
both conquered Italy at twenty-five? Youth, ex
treme youth, overthrew the Persian empire. Don
John, of Austria, won Lepauto at twenty-five—
the greatest battle of modern time. Had it not
been for the jealousy of Ptiilip. the next year he
would have been Emperor of Mauritani.
GaBtoa de Foix was only twenty-two when he
stood a victor on the plains of Ravenni. Eveiy
one remembers Conde and Rocroy at the same
ege, Gustavus -<4dotphus died at thirty-eight.
Look at his captains—that wonderful Dufce ol
Weimer, only thirty-six when be died. Baner
himself, after all his miracles, died at forty-five.
Cortes: waB a little more than thirty when he gaz
ed upon the golden cupolas of Mexico, When
Maurice of Saxony died at thirty two, all Europe
acknowledged the loss of the greatest captain and
the profoundest statesman of the age.
Then there is Nelson Clive; hut these are warriors, and perhaps you may think there are greater things than war. I do not. I worship the
Lord of Hosts. But take the most* iUustrtnn:
achievements of civil prudence. Innocent TIL
the greatest of the popes, was the despot of ( hrist-
endom at thirty-seven.
John de Medtct was a cardinal at fifteen, and
Gutcciardini tells us, baffled with his craft Ferdinand de Aragon himself. He was pope, as Leo X
at thirty seven. Take Ignatius Loyola and John
Wesley; they worked with young brains. Isna
tins waa only thirty when he mide his pilgrimage,
and wrote the Spiritual Exercise. Pascal (the
greatest of Frenchmen) wrote a work at sixteen,
md died at thirty-seven. Ah, that fata' thtrty-
■•ven, which reminds me of Byron—greater even
as a man than a writer.
Was it eiperience that guided the pencil of
Eapbael when he painted the palaces of Rome1;
He died at thirty-seven. Richelieu was Secretary
of Stale at thirty-one. Well, there are Bul
broke end Pitt, both ministers before other men
leave off cricket. Grotius was tn pr dice at
TenteBD, and attorney-general at twenty-four,
And A quaviva—Acquaviva was General of
the Jesuits, ru'ed every cabinet in Europe, and
colonized America be ft re be was thirty-seven
What a career! The secret sway of Europe! That
indeed, was a position. But it is needless to multiply instances. The lmtory of heroes is the history of youth."

The women of Judea believed in the Savior, and

':■:.■-' - The American Girl. Our hearts are with onr native land. Our song is for her glory : Her warrior's wreath is in our hand, Onr lips breathe out her glory. Her lofty bills aud valleys green, Are shining bright before us I And like a raiubow sign is seen Her proud flag waving o'er us. And there are smiles upon her lips For those who meet our foereieu ; For glory's star knows no eclipse, When smiled upou oy women. For those who brave tbe mighty deep And scorn the threat of danger, We've mriles to cheer, and tears to weep For every ocean ranger. Our hearts are with our native land, Our song* are for her freedom ; Our prayers are tor the gallant band Who strike where honor leads them ; Who love the taintless air we breathe, (Tis freedom's endless dower ) We'll twine for him an endle-s wreath Who i-corns a tyrant's power. They teh me ot France's beauties fair, Of Italy's proud daughters ; Of Scotland's lassie*—England"* fair, And "yinphs of Sharon'^ waters We need not boast their haughty charms,! Though lord* around them hover, Onr glory lies in trt-edom's arms— A rRKilMAN lor a lover. Young Genius. Mf. D'Israeli has, in his Coningsby, this striking passage : " Genius, when young, is divine. Why. the greatest captains ot ancient snd modern times both conquered Italy at twenty-five? Youth, ex treme youth, overthrew the Persian empire. Don John, of Austria, won Lepauto at twenty-five— the greatest battle of modern time. Had it not been for the jealousy of Ptiilip. the next year he would have been Emperor of Mauritani. GaBtoa de Foix was only twenty-two when he stood a victor on the plains of Ravenni. Eveiy one remembers Conde and Rocroy at the same ege, Gustavus -<4dotphus died at thirty-eight. Look at his captains—that wonderful Dufce ol Weimer, only thirty-six when be died. Baner himself, after all his miracles, died at forty-five. Cortes: waB a little more than thirty when he gaz ed upon the golden cupolas of Mexico, When Maurice of Saxony died at thirty two, all Europe acknowledged the loss of the greatest captain and the profoundest statesman of the age. Then there is Nelson Clive; hut these are warriors, and perhaps you may think there are greater things than war. I do not. I worship the Lord of Hosts. But take the most* iUustrtnn: achievements of civil prudence. Innocent TIL the greatest of the popes, was the despot of ( hrist- endom at thirty-seven. John de Medtct was a cardinal at fifteen, and Gutcciardini tells us, baffled with his craft Ferdinand de Aragon himself. He was pope, as Leo X at thirty seven. Take Ignatius Loyola and John Wesley; they worked with young brains. Isna tins waa only thirty when he mide his pilgrimage, and wrote the Spiritual Exercise. Pascal (the greatest of Frenchmen) wrote a work at sixteen, md died at thirty-seven. Ah, that fata' thtrty- ■•ven, which reminds me of Byron—greater even as a man than a writer. Was it eiperience that guided the pencil of Eapbael when he painted the palaces of Rome1; He died at thirty-seven. Richelieu was Secretary of Stale at thirty-one. Well, there are Bul broke end Pitt, both ministers before other men leave off cricket. Grotius was tn pr dice at TenteBD, and attorney-general at twenty-four, And A quaviva—Acquaviva was General of the Jesuits, ru'ed every cabinet in Europe, and colonized America be ft re be was thirty-seven What a career! The secret sway of Europe! That indeed, was a position. But it is needless to multiply instances. The lmtory of heroes is the history of youth." *tt Jfiancistd ^imlisenuntsj jsfan jfnutcbra ^brrtiscnunts. BAI LK04D HOUSE N. REYNOLDS Sl CO., JAMES THOMPSON, Proprietor.
