" A WIPsTwASTED I
The lollfwing lines, signed by a person who
calls himself " Horace/' we find ia the San Francisco Evening News. Wo think V Horace" will
have to travel a long time before he finda one having all the accomplishments he enumerates :
I a wife
To cheer my lifo ;
I care not if she's minus beauty,
hut Hud
Tha: she is kind,
Aad k'.u*wa and practices her duty.
I want a wife
Averse to Btr
A gentle, unaffected croature ;
One who can pass
A looking glass
Sana stopping to survey each feature.
I want a wife
With vigor rife;
Whose nerves are never in a flutter ;
Who will not roam,
Bntstay at home.
Aad brew and bake, and make the butter.
I want a wife
Who through her life
Was never known to have a flirt;
Who'll bring to ms
A recipe
Te keep the buttons oa a .-hlrt.
If flitch a one
Dwells 'neath thepun.
And don't from friendn wind geing away,
She'll find true bliss,
And got many a kisi",
By coming to California.
[Our devil aaya he will not be bo fantidioui as
" Horace.*' and weuld take one with half the above
qualification*..]

For ornamontal purposes few trees bear coir,

our Wioter*. It may be net in rows ahout five
feet npart and ivill, ia a short lime, afford a.

tree will thrive in our lattltudei, as 4L does well
in tha Brazlli, where the cold is more intenae
than in the Sacramento and .Sao Joae valliea.—
It ie well known that tbe'CofTee tree doea not
require a higher temperature than the pome-

plant may b<* cultivated here wilh facility.

Story of a Mod, ru Vampire.
Tha poapantry of Huogarj*, Croatia, Dalmatia,
rolnnti and Turkey still liclitvo in vampires, and
all attempts to eradicate the belief ltave IkUed.—
They hold that the vampiren, when buried, remain
with their eyes wide open, and that i:.
and nails constantly grow; also that they come
from tho tomb at dead of night, and Rick the
blood of their victims—leaving no traces behind
except a little red or blue spot on tlie neck and
throat; and, finally, that the only way of getting
rid of them is to cut off their heads and burn their
bodies. A German paper relates a curious instance
of thia popular superstition, which recently occurred atSpalatro, in Dalmatia : " A young and beau*
tiful girl, tho daughter of a wealthy peasant, had
numerous laitflra, and from amongst them she
selected ono of her own station in lift. The be.
trothal of tho young couple was celebrated by a
grand feast given by tho girl's father. Towards
midnight the girl and her mother retired to their
chamber, leaving the father and guests at the ta.
bK All at once the two women were heard to
shriek dreadfully, nnd the moment afterward*,
tho mother, pale and haggard, tottered into the
room, carrying her daughter leaeelete in her
arms, and crying In a vote* of Indescribable ago_
ny. A vampire! a vampire! my daughter is dead.
The vlltaga doctor happened tu be among tVe
guests, and seeing that thei'glrl had only fainted,
administered to her a cordial, which restored her
to consciousness; and he then questioned her
She stated that as she was undressing a pale
spectre, dressed iu a shroud, had glided in by the
■
throat—after which ho had disappeared;
added that she had recognized him as one Krys-
bewsky, a rejected, suiter of Lew, who had died a
fortnight before. The doctor attempted to persuade tho girl that she must be laboring
some delusion, but she persisted in b
The parents and guests unhesitatingly believed
that fhe had really been bitten by a vampire, and
they were very angry with Ihe dr.ctur fcr srara-
ming to sa.y to the contrary. The neat day nearly all the men of tho village, armed with gnitt,
and all the women proceeded to the cemetery, ottering dreadful imprecations against the vampire
Krysnewsky.
The coffin of the deceased was dug up and farced
open, and being raised on end, twenty -
tired at the skull of the corpse. The fragments
of oarage dances and. cries, were horned in a huge
fire, as was the body itself afterwards. The girl
was taken seriously iii, and continued to g
for about a fortnight, when she died. She con-
itantly persisted in saying that she had I
ti u in the throat by a vampire, but she would on
no account allow the doctor to examine the wound.
After her death, hewever, he took the I
from her neck, and found a small wont
throat, which had the appearance of harm
made by a harness-maker's awl, which bad been
poisoned. The doctor then learned that one of
tbe rejected raitors of the girl was a banresa-
makerofan adjacent village, and he did notdotfbt
that it was he who had stubbed the girl. He gave
