action brought against.jou by the above named
plaintiff, in the District Court of the First Judicial
District, in and for the County of Los Angeles, and
answer the complaint filed therein, ^a copy ol
wliich accompanies this snmmons,} within ten

service on yon of this summons—if served within
thiB County; if served out of thiB County, but
within this Judicial District within twenty days ;

The said action is brought to obtain a decree of
this Court for the foreclosure of a certain mortgage described in the complaint filed herein and
executed by the said Isaac S. K. Ogier aud Anna
Ogier, on the Gth day of May, 1858, to secure the
payment of three certain promissory notes, each
dated on the fith day of May, 1858, executed by
the said Isaac S. K. Ogier, each for the sum of oue
I thousand four hundred andsixteeti and sixty-six
one'hundredth dollars ($1,416 66100) with interest
thereon at the rate of one and one-half of oue per
I cent, per mouth, that the premises conveyed thereby may be sold, and the.proceeds applied to the
payment ofthe said notes mentioned in the aforesaid complaint, and in case such proceeds are not
sufficient to pay the same, then have judgment
docketed against the said Henry N. Alexander,
Administrator as aforesaid, for the balance remuin-
ing due, and also that tbe said defendants, and all
persons claiming by, through or under them, may
be barred and foreclosed of all right, title and interest in and to said mortgaged premisu^ and for other
and further relief ; and if you fail to appear and
answer the said complaint, as above required, the
plaintiff will enter your default aud apply to the
Court for the relief prayed for in bis said complaint.

The most interesting natural curiosity here,
next to Secretary Welles' beard, is the office of tlie
Secretary of the Interior. Covered with spider
webs; and clothed in the dust of ages, my boy, sit

The General frowned like an obdurant parent

ago I was informed by a contraband that sixty
thousand unnatural rebels were intrenched some-'
where near here, and having returned the contraband to his master to be immediately shot, I resolved to overwhelm the rebels by strategy. Thunder !" says the General, perspiring like a pitcher
of ice water in June, "if there's anything in the
world equal to diplomacy, it's strategy. And
now," says the Geueral, sternly, " It's my duty to
order you to write nothing about it to the papers.
You write about my movements ; the papers publish it, and are sent here, my Adjutant takes the
papers to the rebels, and so, you see, my plana

the news from the rebels by arresting the Adjutant."

Great men, my boy, arc never so great but they

olds ; but when its three to one, it's more respectable to have all quiet on the Potomac. Halt, lel-

sun is issued by the divine editor."
The orb of light was calmly stealing up the
east, my boy, when Captain Bob Shorty sprang
from his blanket and observed the house, belore

'• I have the pleasure to announce the occupation
of this place, the result of a hard fought action
yesterday. Hancock's Brigade, during the light,
turned the left oftbe enemy's line ot works. The
enemy abandoned their entire line during the night
leaving all the sick and wounded on our bands,
Their loss yesterday, was very severe. We bare
some 300 wounded, and mure than 1,000 prisoners,
including the enemy's wounded. Our vielory is
complete. I have sent the Cavalry in pursuit.
The conduct of my men. with seircely an exception,
was excellent. The enemy's works are iMen-ive,
and exceedingly strong. Gen. Hooker's division

There were over sixty fine French Merino sheep,
from the Brannan Ranch, on the ground, find eight,
shearers presented themselves. The shearing commenced in tho forenoon, under the supervision of
the following Committed : Messrs. McDonald, of
Alameda county ; Montgomery, of Butte, and J.
W. Moore, of Yuba county. The shearers were a«
