San BicRNitniNO, June 26th, 1859, Editor Star—The "Dramatic Association" of this place have in reher+rsal another local farce, founded onfacts, of course, as you will see from the report of our late Graud Jury. I will send you a copy of some of the most interesting scenes for your perusal. Quito a fashionable wedding came offhereon the-15th inst,, Bethel Coopwood, Esq. to Miss Josephine Woodard, both of this cily. The ceremony was performed in a very imposing manner, by Elder Seely, at the residence of the bride's father. After the marriage ceremony, the happy-pair entertained the guests to an elegant supper, which consisted oi all tho delicacies aud luxuries of the season. On the evening of the 2Ist inst. Mr. Coop wood gave a grand ball at the American Hotel ; the attendance of ladies and gentlemen was great er than I have ever seen at a ball iu this place_ The ball continued until the dawn of'morn, all unwilling to leave the festive scene; and whe" they left it was with heartfelt wishes for the peace and prosperity of tho young couple, who had started together upon life's matrimonial path, I wish them a long life and a happy one. The weather here has been intensely hot for several days past, the thermometer indicating as high as 116 to 118, in the shade. ■^■^^~~>^*-i 1 At a called meeting of the citizens of San Bernardino, held at school house No. 1, in the city ot San Bernardino, on Saturday, the 7th day of May, 1S59, JudgeS. RUSSELL'S PJITE.VT. FRANCIS MELIUS, HAVING purchased the patent right ofthe above valuable invention, for the purpose of supplying tho counties of Los Angelea, San Bernardino and San Diego, is now prepared to execute all orders with which he may be favored. The public are aware that it has been the study of scientific men, architects aud buiiders, for many, years to discover an article for Roofing purposes, that will withstand sudden changes ot climate, be impervious to water, and of suro protection against fire. The inventor of this rooliug labored many years to combine articles which would answer the above purpose Jind'obviate the difficulties of rust and decay attendant upou tin and shingles, and the destruction by the sun and frost of the various compositions used for roofing. This he succeeded in doing, and now, after.six years of the severest trial we would invite tho careful attention of all interested in such matters, believing that thoy will be fully convinced of ita practical valuo both for durability and economy, in which respects we believe that its equal is not at preseut known. This roofing can readily be applied to roofs of every description, either steep or flat, and can bo put on over shingles or tin, being much cheaper than tbe first and at half the cost of the latter. Two coats of the mastic put on over an old leaky tin roof, will make it as good as new at one-third of the cost. In preparing this roofing a heavy drilling or canvass is used, which is thoroughly saturated witb a perfectly waterproof preparation, after which it receives a thick coating, upon both Bides, of the (lour of soapstone, which sets into the texture of tbc canvass, and gives it a firm body, making it very elastic and durable. After the canvass, as prepared, ia put upou the roof, another coating of mastic, which is thoroughly filled with sand, is given it, making it fireproof in every respect. By exposure, this coating becomes (inn and solid, giving you a roof that can be walked upou with perfect impunity, and as durable as anything known; and we do most candidly and unhesitatingly believe, far superior to anything of the kind yet discovered; and alter a severe test of many years, stand as reliable and good as when first put on, without change or decay. All that wo ask is, that a careful examination may be given it, and we feel convinced that it will bear all the recommendation which we offer of it. Annexed we give you the names of some of the persons using this roofing, aud to whom we are at liberty to refer: UUfKKKNCHS. LAVENTHAL & LETTER. Los Angeles, Aug. 28,1858. The War News. A great battle has been fought in Italy, the accounts giving the victory to the French. But it has been found, heretofore, that the Austrian accounts differ widely from those which we first receive. There seems to have been a morbid desire on the part of the people generally, to hear of some grand battle, wherein hundreds of thousands of men were led up to slaughter, and thousands left dead on the ground. The previous battles, of Montibello, and Palaestro, have been denominated fifth rate contests, but we think the moat ardent war hero will he satisfied with tho massacre at Magenta—250,000 nsen in battle,—a slaughter of »t least 30,000 human beings. Propositions of peace will no doubt now be made by some ofthe neutral powers; but we do not think that Austria is in a condition to accept them. She has fought well, but victory has not crowned her efforts ; she could not claim the listatu quo ante," nor is it to be expected that France would grant it; Austria has not put forth all her power, and until she does so, and is made to feel the force of France, and her own inability to cope with that great Empire, she will prolong tho struggle, which seems destined to close with her defeat and dismemberment. As the Evening Post says, the brunt of the war is now at hand. Austria thus far has been merely driven from her outposts, and will undoubtedly concentrate her armies in the districts defended by what have been considered the four impregnable citadels, Lignano, Peschiera, Verona, and Mantua. Three of these aro disposed in a triangular position, and armed with such completeness, that tbey are spoken of as models of military and engineering art. In the revolution of 1848, the condition of the Austrians was nearly as desperate as it now is; nevertheless, Radetzki, supporting himself on these fortresses, and rallying from them as the occasion required, reduced Lombardy to subjectiou once more, and succeeded in expelling the Sardinian King, Charles Albert, to his own side ofthe Ticino. With equal generalship, the French will find it no easy thing to bring about the end at which they aim—the abandonment of Lombardy by Austria. Garribaldi has been doing wonders for Victor Emanuel in the Alpine mountains, and in Uie vicinity of the famous Lake of Como. He has engaged the Austrian forces, and on each occasion routed them. At times, it was supposed ho was hemmed and considered an easy prey, but with wonderful tact he makes his way through the defeat and dispersal of his foes. The Sardinians have behaved throughout with great bravery, and show themselves worthy allies of tho FveiioL pfiopio. The latest telegraphic dispatches, copied from the Missouri Republican, will be found below :— Later front Europe. Desperate and bloody fight at Magenta, Farthek Point, Below Quebec, June 18.—The steamship Anglo-Saxon, from Liverpool on the 18th inst., passed this point this morning, bound for Quebec. Her advices are four days later. In the Liverpool cotton market the quotations reported by the last steamer were barely main tained. and in some cases there were sales at a decline of Jd. All qualities ot bread stuffs had slightly de- cined. Provisien market was dull. London, June.—Consols are quoted at 93£ to 334c. The steamer Anglo-Saxon brings most important news from tbe seat of war. A great bottle has beeD fought near Milan, in which the Austrians were defeated, with the loss of 20,000 killed and disabled; 5,000 Austrians were taken prisioners. The French loss is estimated at 12,000. The AustriaDS bave evacuated Milan The Queen's speech was delivered in Parliament on the 7th inst. It contains nothiog very important. A motion v*as pending ot a want of confidence in the ministry. . Later.—A desperate battle was fought at Magenta on the 4th of June, between the allied army under the Emperor Napoleon and the Austrian army under Gen. Hess, in which unlimited forces were engaged on both sides. The Emperor Napoleon, in his despatches to the Empress at the Tuilleries, claims a decisive victory, saying that his army took 7,000 prisoners, disabled 12,000, and captured three cannons and two standards. He estimates the loss of his own army at 3,000, but it was rumored in Paris that the French loss was between 9.000 aud 12.000. It is reported that there was from 150,000 to 180,000 Austrians, and 130,000 French engaged in the battle. Tbe Austrian accounts differ widely from those ol tbe French. Their bulletins speak of several battles being fought, with varying success on both The French squadron in the Adriatic have captured thirt-y-fie Austrian vesscis.'valucd at £l,0oo,- 00. Garibaldi has gained a new victory, and the insurrection in Lombardy is spreading. Austrian Official Buli-et'iks.—Verona, June 1st.—The enemy attacked the vanguards ofthe seventeenth Austrian corps, but their further advance waB stopped by the corps under Gejl. Zolbel Avery large number were reported to have been wounded during the encounter. Milan, June 2.—On the 1st instant, Varez was cannonaded and taken by Gen. Urban, who re-instated the authorities, and levied war contributions on tbe city. It is stated that the prosDectus of a new company will be issued in a few days, for laying a telegraphic cable from Cornwall to'Canada. The proposed capital is £500,000 sterling. A ; great explosion of sail peter occurred on board the troop ship Eastern Monarch, from Kurriicbe, while she was anchored off Spithead, Willi 500 returned soldiers and tiieir families on board. Tha ship was speedily enveloped iu flames, but through the prompt action of her officers and crew, all but seven persons were saved. Five out of the seven los were children, who were killed by the explosion. France.—The re call of the soldiers on leave has added 120,000 veterans to the army. Flat-bottomed gun-boats are in process of construction in France to navigate the Po, Ticino, and other rivers of Italy. Twenty-two additional battalions of foot Ch seurs are to be organized. Italy.—The TJ. S. frigate "Wabash, with the British man-of-war, fired guns in tribute to the memory ofthe late King of Naples. It istate that Piedmoote has recognized the neutrality of the Papal States with certain conditions. Germany.—An extensive French manufacturer, whose establishment at Hesse Caesel employed 700 hands, haa been compelled to quit, in consequence of the excitement against the French. Prussia.—The terms of the new loun by the Prussian Governmeut, have been published. The loan is to bear five per cent, interest, and be issued by public subscription. The redemption of the loan is to commence in 18G3, by payment of one per cent, annually, thereafter, until it is called Turkey.—The garrison at Belgrade has been reinforced, and ita numbers are reported to be trebled. The Porte is about to send a strong naval force to the Adriatic. Hersegoria was in open revolt. The latest intelligence was to the effect that a revolt in the whole of European Turkey waB imminent. From. Arizona. Tucson, May 27th, 1859. Friend Hamilton—There's a dearth of anything of interest since the Mexican difficulties. The following items! obtained from a portion of the Gila prospecting party, who have returned here. If they have been anticipated as news, you probably can find something in them to work into paragraphs. The party numbered fifty, starting from their rendezvous at the crossing ot the San Pedro— struck in a northerly direction to head of Mineral Creek, thence across the Pinal mountains to the Salinas, which they followed to its head in the Sierra Blanca, where tbe five who returned left them ; the balance of the party, taking a northeast direction, intending to goto tbe sources of the Rio Bonita. They found the country well watered and timbered—-plenty of fine arable lands, and excellent grazing throughout. Apaches alt professed friendship. Upon the Salinas and its tributaries they found the "color" wherever they ptospected, but no amount that warranted their stopping to work. I have seen several small t-pecimens which they obtained from the Apaches. One of the Pinal chiefs agreed to meet the party at Tucson, on San Juan's day—24th of June—and conduct the party to^a point where he said they could obtain plenty of coarse gold. At a rancheria, on A'usgong Creek a tributary of the Salinas—they found an old chief who could speak fair Spanish, who informed tbem that in a large mountain at the head of tho Salinas?, there was a cave, through which ran a vein of glittering ore, a vara in width ; but when tho Spauish Padres visKed the country, many years ago, they were forbidden by them to ever visit the place, under penalty of death He said further, that there were four boys always watching for the approach of any one, which they signalized by a smoke from tho top ofthe mountain. They were willing the Americans should go there, but declined piloting them. The same thing was told them at three other raricherlasj at some distance from the first named. So you will sec that it amouuta to something more than a traditional story. I am acquainted with the persons who gave me this information, and you may rely upon it. Yours, respectfully, 3. It was still undecided on the night of the Gth, to who gained the victory. Great losses on both sides are reported. Genera! of Division, Espinasse, of the second corps d'armee, was killed, and Marshal Caurobert command of the third corps, was mortally wouu- ded. General Maurice McMahon, commanding second corpus d'armee, has been created Marshal and Duke de Magenta, os a reward for his bravery on the battle-field. Five of tho French Marshals and Generals were wounded. .; Marehal Count Barraguay d'HIUiers, has been superceded in his command of the first corps d'ar- ee, by Geu. Forey. Four Austrian Generals ond five staff officers were wounded ot the battle. There had been a general revolt at Milan, and the people had declercd in favor of tbe King of Sardinia. The Austrians bad retired from Milan, but the city had not yet been occupied by the French. Later rumors detract from the French claim to the victory at Maeenta. It was believed that proposals of peace would follow tho entrance of the French army iuto Mi- lttD. ' France.—The city of Paris had been illuminated in honor of tho viotory oftheFrench army at Magenta. The Paria Bourse wos active and the 3's had advanced. Turin, June 3.—Gen. Garibaldi baa surprised and defeated the Austrians at Varez, and that town is again free of the enemy. Geu. Garibaldi reentered Como on the night of the 2d. Gen. Niel entered Novara on tbe first after a slight encounter with the Austrian out posts, who shortly fled. The Emperor arrived the eame evening amid the acclamation ot the people. The Ausfrinus attempted to cross the Po at Ba- signaro, but the inhabitants opposed them, firing upon aud destroying an Austrian bark. The Vat- teline is in a state of insurrection. The town ot Saudrio bas proclaimed for King Victor Emanuel. [For the Star. The Recent Calamities—A Warning. The truths of Scripture aro of general applica tion. They are addressed as much to the people of to-day, aa applicable to those who shall enact their part on the world's stage a century hence, as they were to those whom the thunders of Sinai appealed, or who listened to the precepta of love and good will falling from the lips of our Divine master. All scripture is given by inspiration, and is profltable for instruction, for reproof, and correction. Of the many precepts of religion, there is none which appeals more forcibly to our judgment, which so fully corresponds with our expert, ence, aa thia one—" la the midst of life we are In death." Based on the experience of human ity during all time, sound iu its philosophy, it teaches, in tones persuasive and eloquent, a lesson which none should forget, but which few seem to remember. We know not what a day, an hour may bring forth; man growethup as a flower, and is cut down; in a moment, In the twinkling of au eye the place that knows him will know him no more forever. Then, how important the admonition — " Prepare to meet thy God," Let man neglect, or rail at, religion, aa he may, there is within him monitor, the low, peaceful voice of conscience that disturbs his forced conclusions, and tells him that he is immortal. This mortal shall put on immortality; this corruption shall put on incorruption; the mind, the soul, the active, life giving principle, bounding witb hope and animation, ever looking forward, instinct with godlike conviction of its inherent eternity ot existence— the soul, far-seeing, wide reaching, comprehending the past, with inquisitive gaze, peering into the dim future,—this holy principle was not, could not have been, imparted to mau merely to animate the body of his present existence, and be condemned to cold annihilation's palsied doom No, man is immortal; that immortality shall be passed in happiness or misery. ; Then let us so number our days, as to apply our hearts unto wisdom—that wisdom which cometh from above, and teaches us whilst here, to prepare for hereafter. We have lately seen Death's arrows carry oil, suddenly, our fellow-citizens, one after another; snatching them away in tbe full bloom of life and manhood, almost without warning, from all that waa dear and loved. Ofall modes by which the bills of mortality are filled, we bave lately se'jn Death tho Inexorable, assume amongst us the most startling, the most horrible. Whose time may it not be next, and at what moment? It is a solemn lesson, an awful warning ! Let each lay it to heart. . *.++ The Missouri Republican has added one of Hoe'a four-cylinder printiug presses to the force of their establishmedt, and takes occasion to give a very interesting accouat of their business facilities aud success. In addition to the new machine, which prints 8,000 impressions an hour, there are two other Hoe's presses, capable of printing 5.000 per hour each. To drive these, there are two steam engines. In tbe job department, there are fourteen presses, of various kinds, suitable for book, job) and card printing. The bindery is supplied with all the improvements in that Hue, andis on a scale equally extensive with the printing departments, The establishment occupies a building -16 feet front by 86 feet deep, six stories high. The Republican employs 176 bauds, in the various departments, at a weekly salary of $2074. Add to this, $1,306 U per week, for paper for the Republican, $700 per week for stock for the job office, $220 for bindery, and $220 per week for sundry expenses, not included in any of the above details, and the aggregate is $4,500 44 per week—the actual sum expended each week of the year in sustaining the establish ment. Tbo busiuess done must, of course, be com mensurate with, and yield 9 liberal return on, the capital invented. San BicRNitniNO, June 26th, 1859,
Editor Star—The "Dramatic Association" of
this place have in reher+rsal another local farce,
founded onfacts, of course, as you will see from
the report of our late Graud Jury. I will send
you a copy of some of the most interesting scenes
for your perusal.
Quito a fashionable wedding came offhereon
the-15th inst,, Bethel Coopwood, Esq. to Miss Josephine Woodard, both of this cily. The ceremony
was performed in a very imposing manner, by Elder Seely, at the residence of the bride's father.
After the marriage ceremony, the happy-pair entertained the guests to an elegant supper, which
consisted oi all tho delicacies aud luxuries of the
season. On the evening of the 2Ist inst. Mr. Coop
wood gave a grand ball at the American Hotel ;
the attendance of ladies and gentlemen was great
er than I have ever seen at a ball iu this place_
The ball continued until the dawn of'morn, all
unwilling to leave the festive scene; and whe"
they left it was with heartfelt wishes for the peace
and prosperity of tho young couple, who had
started together upon life's matrimonial path, I
wish them a long life and a happy one.
The weather here has been intensely hot for several days past, the thermometer indicating as high
as 116 to 118, in the shade.
