The Mliialrtl- Curir.
"My ma'ison," the minstrel said,
I give to man or youth ;
Who alights a loyal lady's love,
Or trusts a wanton's troth.
And on his traitor head shall fall,
Not only curse of mine,
Iluf, cited down, at nature's evil.
God's malison divine.
We're borne our lady to tbc grave,
This weary, weary day,
While bitn she loved, a wanton's slafe,
la false and far sway.
He riots in bis lcman's bower.
He -(oaffe her philtered wine ;
False kntghtl (alee love I this very hour,
Where is that wife o( thine 1
He wed her on midsummer eve,
With taper and with ring ;
His passion withered with the leaf,
Rut came uot wilb tbe spring.
She marked tbe change—poor heart,
She fflSmd hiii! fi
She strove to play —lbe storied part,
She sickened aud she did.
She lies outstretched in churchyard clay,
She drinks tbe deadly dew ;
He leads the revels far away,
Tbc noisiest ol his crew.
But on his traitor head shall fall,
Not only curse of mioe ;
Hut cited down it nature's call,
God's malison divine.

E. P. RUSSELUS PATENT.
FRANCIS MELLUS,
HAVING purchased the patent right ofthe above
valuable invention, for the purpose of supplying tho counties of Los Angeles, Sau Bernardino
nnd Sau Diego, is now prepared to execute all orders with which he may be favored.
The public are aware that it has been the study of
Scientific men, architects and builders, for many years
to discover an article for Roofing purposes, that will
withstand sudden changes ol climate, be impervious
to water, and of sure protection against fire. The
inventor of this roofing labored many years to combine) article,, which would answer the above purpose
and obviate the difficulties of rust and decay attendant upon Un and shingles, aud the destruction by
tho sun aud frost of the various compositions used
tor roofing. Thia ho succeeded in doing, and now,
after six years of the severest trial we would invite
the careful attention of all interested in sueh matters,
believing that they will be fully convinced of its
practical value both for durability and economy, in
which respects we believe that its equal is not at
present known. This roofing can readily be applied
to roofs of every description, either steep or flat, and
can bo put on over shingles or tin, being much cheaper than the first and at half the cost of the latter.
Two coats of tiie mastic put on over au old leaky
tin roof, will make it as good as new at one-third of
the cost. In preparing this roofing a heavy drilling
or canvass is used, wliich is thoroughly saturated
■with a perfectly water-praof preparation, after which
it receives a thick coatiiig, upon both sides, of (tho
Hour of soapstone, which sets into the texture of the
canvass, and gives it a firm body, making it very
clastic and durable. After the canvass, as prepared,
is put upon tho roof, another coating of mastic, wliich
is thoroughly filled with sand, is given it, making it
fireproof in every respect. By exposure, this coating becomes firm and solid, giving you a roof that
can. be walked upon with perfect impunity, and as
durable as anything known; ami we do most candidly
and unhesitatingly believe, far superior to anything
of the kiud yet discovered; and alter a severe lest
of many years, stand as reliable and good as when
first put On, without change or decay. All that we
ask is, that a careful examination maybe given it,
and we feel convinced that it will bear all the recommendation which we offer of it. Annexed we give
you the names of some ofthe peraons using this
roofing, and to whom we are at libei ty to refer:

ISattlcs ot Napoleon.
An exhangc gives the following history of the
battles of Napoleon, from May 10th, 17%, to June,
1816, including thatoT Wutorloo, la whioh tbo
French were defeated with a loss of 40,000, men:—
At Lodi, in Lombardy, on the 10th of May, 179G,
Napoleon gained a decided victory over the Auk-
triaiiH, the most desperate contest having beeu at
a wooden bridge over the Adda.
At Arcolc, a litlle village of northern Italy, on
the 17th ol November, 179C, Nopoleon gained a
great victory over the Austrians, but with a terrible slaughter on both BideB. tbe Austraians having 18,000 and the French 15:000 killed and
wounded.
On the the banks of the Trebbia river in Italy,
ten miles from Genoa, the French army, under
Marshal McDonald, on the 10th of June, 1799,
faught an allied Austrian and llussian Army, in a
battle which lasted three days, and in which the
French lost 12.000 men, and the Allies an equal
number. It was iu this vicinity that 218 years before Christ, Hannibal fought a great battle and
defeated the Romans.
In the plain Marengo, at the foot ofthe Appenines, li miles from the strong Sardinian fortifications of Alessandria, in 1799, the French under
Marshal Joubert, were defeated by the combined
Austrians. and Ittissiane, under Suwarrow. Each
