"It was a aad funeral to me," paid tbe speaker;
"the aaddest one I bave attended for many years."
"That of Edmonson ?"
'Yes."
"Uow did he die V
"Poor—poor as poverty—his life was one long
straggle with the world, and at disadvantage.
Fortune nocked him all the while with golden
promises, none ol which were realized."
"Yet he waa patient and enduring," remarked
one ot the company.
"Patient as a Christian—endm ing as a martyr,"
«rasanswered. "Poor man! he was worthy a better fat«. Ue ought to have succeeded, for he deterred success."
"Did he not succeed T" questioned the one who
had spoken ol hia perseverance and endurance.
"No, air, he died poor as I have juet said. Nothing that he put hia hand to ever succeeded, A
strange fatality seemed to attend every enterprise."
"I was witb him In his last momenta,-' said tbe
other, ''and I thought he died rich."
"No, he left coining behind," was the reply-
"Tha hcira will bave no concern as to the adminia"

"Ue left a good oarae," said one, "aad that is

"And a legacy of noble deeds, done in the name
of humanity," aaid another.
"And precious examples," aaid a third.
"Lesaons of poliencc iu suffering, of hope in ad-
veralty, of heavenly cocfidence when no sunbeams
fell opou hia bewildered path," was tbo testimony
Ol another.
'-And high troths, manly courage, heroic fortitude."
"Then he died rich!" was the emphatic declaration. "Richer thau the millionaire who went to
his long home the same day. a miserable pauper
In all but gold. A sad funeral did you say ? No,
my friend, it was rather a triumphal procession.
Not a burial of a human clod, but tbc ceremonial
attendant upon tbu translation of an angel. Did
he not succeed! Why, his whole life was a series
ol successes. In every conflict, be came ont victor, aod now the victor's crown is upon his brow."

"For that," replied the gcnlleman, in no way

The laughter that tbis reply excited extended

I saw a bund of brothers move,

I o*>ked a man ot four Kcoro years
Why after them he rati!

They feed the poor old man ;
He said, I once was sick and sad,

They came, they comforted and clad j
Tlie old man rose again.
I asked a weeping widow- why
She followed tbose betore T
She Raid—and wiped her weeping eyes—
Tbey came unto my door ;
They came wheu all the world beeide
Hud turned from me and fled—
They came nty wanl* and woes to bide ;
Tbey gave my children bread.
I naked an orphan boy why ho
His eager footsteps bend*!
He said—they smile on all like me,
Tbey wcrti my fnlhovs fYiind^ ;
Before lie died tliey clothed aud led,
And all onr gifts tbey gave,
And when we wept for lather dead,
They threw gifts in his grave.
And such, I .aid, are Masons all,
-Friends to the needy poor ;

They never shun his door,

Good night I a word so often said,
The heed lees mind forgets its meaning ;
'Tie only when the heart lies dead,
Ou which our OWO was leauing,
We bear iu maddening music roll
That last "good night" along the BOul.
Good night I in tones that never die
Il peals along the quickening ear,
And tender galea of memory
Forever wait it near,
When stilled th»> voice—ob, crush of pain—
That ne'er Bhall breathe "good night" again.
Good night! it mocks us from lhe grave {
It overleaps that strange world's bound,
From whence there now* no backward wave
It calls from out tbo ground,
On every side, around, above,
Good night, good night to life and love.
Good night 1 ob, wherefore fades away
The light tbat lived in lhat dear word T
Why follows that "good night" no day,

Oh, rather say, dull brain, once more,
Good night! thy time of toil iB o'er.
Good night! now comcth gentle sleep,

Good night'. oh, holy, blest and deep

Tiik Comet.—The following ie the conclusion of
lion. Edward Everett's 'Ml. Vernon Paper'' in
the New York Ledger upon the Comet:
"Return, then, mysterious traveler, to the
depths of tbe Heavens, never again to be Been by
tbe eyes of men now living 1 Thou bast run thy
race ot glory ; millions of eyes have gazed upon
thee wiih wonder ; but tbey shall never look upon
thee again. Since my laet appearance in these
lower skies, empireB, languages and races ot men
have passed away ; tbe Macedonian, tbe Alexan
drian, the Augustan, the Partial), tho Byzantine*
lbe Sarcenic, tbo Ottoman dynasties have sunk'
or arc sinking iuto the gulf of ages. Since thy
last appearance, old continents have relapsed
into Ignorance, and new worlds have come out
from behind tbe veil of waters. The Magian fires
arc quenched on tho bill-tops of Asia; the Chaldean seer is blind : the Egyptian hierogrammlsts
have lost their cunning ; the oracles aro dumb.—
Wisdom now dwels in (nrlherest Thule,or in newly
discovered worlds beyond the sea. Haply when,
wheeling up again from the celestial abyss, thou
art once more seen by tbe dwellers on earth, the
languages we ppeak ahall also be forgotten, and
science Hhttll have fled to the uttermost corners of
lbe earth, lint even there. His hand that now
marks out Iby wonderons circuit, shall guide thy
course; and then, as now, Hesper will smile at
lliy approach, and Arcturtie with his bobs rpjoice
at thy coming."

chiefly upon the Islands of Hilo and Oahu. Upon
Hilo, some three hundred natives are employed in

to the colton boll, and placed on mats slung from
