Forest Prayer.
B"Sf R. M. m'cluke
Here, in tlie dim old wods,
This glerioua Sabbath even,
I kneel among the tall, green oaks,
And oiler thanks to Heaven.
This place is meet for prayer—
A house not reared by man ;
No human architect e'er dreamed
Of such a noble plan.
The floor, the bright, green earth—
The roof, the sapphire sky—
The pulpit, this tall oak—the choir,
The wind 'hat passes by.
Here, free from toil and care,
Far Irom the cily's din,
How sweet to kneel and ask frum God
Forgiveness tor our sin.
Here, 'mid His glorious works,
These colonaden ol tn es,
Th"si- moss , liiwi! rocks aed summer tlowe
This mild, ethereal breeze ;
Wbo can but feel bis power
Through A\ ihis wide abode?
Aye, hear a voice within the soul
Say : ■' Bow aud worship God."
Oh I Thou who rulest on high.
O'er Heaven, and earth, and seas.
WbO gemmed the lirmument with stars,
Aud planted all these trees ;
Beneath whose care tne worlds
In endless cycles roll—
Thou hearer of all praise and prayer
Speak peace unto my soul!

WoMax and Mai-riagk.—I havo speculated a
great deal upi n matrimony. I have seen a young
end beautiful woman, the pride of gay circh-S'
married, as the world saya, well. Some have
moved into costly houses, and their iriends have
come and looked at their furniture and their
splendid arrangement for happiness, and they
have gone away and committed them to their
sunny hopes cheerlully and without fear. It
natural to be sanguine for therm ; as tbe young
sometimes are carried away by similar feelings.
I love to get, unobsei ved, iuio a corner, and watch
the bride in her while attire and, with her smiling face aud soft eyes meeting me in their pride
of life, weave a waking dieam of future happiness,
and persuade myself that it will be true I think
how they will sit upon the luxuriant sofa as the
twilight falls, and build gay hopes and murmur
in low tones the now not unforbidden tenderness ;
and how thrillin^Iy the allowed kiss and beautiful endearments oi wedded liie will make even
their parting joyous, and how gladly come back
from the crowded and empty mirth ol the gay to
each other's company. I picture to myself that
young creature, who blushes, even now, at bis
heMta-ting carta*, nstenttig eagerly lor bis footsteps as the night steals on, and wishing that lie
would come, and, when he enters at last, and, with
an affection aa undying as his pulse, folds her to
his bosom, I can (eel the tide that goi 8 flowing
through the heart, and gaze wilh him on the grace-
lul form as she moves about for the kind offices of
affection, Boothiag all his unquiet cares and making him forgei even himself in ber you. g and unshadowed beauty. I go forward for years, and see
ber luxuriant hair put soberly away fiom her brow,
and her girl sh graces resigned into dignity, and
ovliness chastened with the gentle meekness of
maternal affection. Her husband looks on her
with a proud eye, and shows her the same fervent
love and delicate attentions wliich first won her ;
nnd her fair children are grown about them, and
they go on lull of honor and untroubled years, and
are remembered when they die.— H ashington Ir-

female beauty, and to leave every lady to rate bei

To Ascertain the Weight of Live Stock.—
First see that the animal stands square, then, witb
a string take his circumference just behind the
shoulder-blade, and measure the feet and inches
this, is the girth. Then measure from the bone of
the tail which plumbs the line frcm the hinder
part of the bullock, and direct the string alon;
ihe br.ck. lo tlie fore part of tbe shoulder-blade,
and thia Will be the length. Then work tbe figures
thus: Supposed girth of the animal six feet and
four inches, length, five feet thfee iuches, which.
multiplied together, give thirty-eight square superficial feet; and this multiplied by twenty-three,
(the number of pounds allowed for each superficial
foot of cattle measuring less than seven and more
than five foot in girth,) male 759 pounds. When
tbe animal measures more lhan nine aud less than
seven feet in girth, tbiity-one is the number of
pounds lor each supercial foot. If the animal
measured two feet in girth and two feet in length,
this multiplied by eleven would give its weight.
When the animal measures less than fiveaud more
than three, multiply the girth by the length and
the pn duct by nineteen for its weight. We
have seen these rules tested, and believe tbem
to be sufficiently accurate in computing tbe weight
ol live stock.— Exchange.
Education in Sardinia.—The Genoa correspt*-
dent of the Newark Advertiser says that Sardinia
contains over nine thousand schools, with over
four hundred thousand pupils, besides numerous
classical institutions, and three great universities
with over six thousand students. Besides numerous daily journals of every shade ol opinion, there
are fifty periodicals, including literary reviews,
agricultural magazines, one devoted to mechanic
arls. one to commerce, two to jurisprudence,.three
to medicine, one to railway and statistical matters,
and two devoted to the spread of free religion ;
and they are widely circulated and read- The
free discussions of parliament are reproduced in
every neighborhood by a cheap daily press. In
1855. under the reduced postage law, the number
ol' letters were doubled—amounting to 13.000,000.
The correspondent truly icmarks in view of these
facts, tbat they are without precedent or parallel
in Southern Europe.

HoitKons oi' tiie Jaii. of Vienna.—But let us'
listen for a moment to the voice of a more recent
victim of the Austrian Court, the young and patriotic Count Gonfalonier!, whose crime it was to
be un Italian and to love his country. In a few
of the most awful lines ever penned, thus he wrote
tbe story of hia life :
"I am an old man no-"f, yet by fifteen years my
soul is younger than my body ! Filteen years I
existedj (for I did not live, it ww not life,) in tho
self-same dungeon, ten feet square! During six:
years I had a companion ; nine years I was alone.
I never could rightly distinguish the face of him-
who shared my captivity in the eternal twilight
ol our cell. The 3rst year we talked incessantly
together ; we related our past liyes, our joys forever gone, over and over again. The next year
we communicated our ideas to each otber on all
subjects. The third year we had no ideas to communicate, we were beginning to lose the power of
reflection. The fourth, at intervals af a month or
so, we would open our lips to each other; if it
were indeed possible that the world went on as gay
and bristling as when we formed a portion of mankind. The fifth year we were Bileut. The sixth
he was taken away—I never knew where, to exe--
cution or to liberty ; but I was glad when he waa
gone, even solitude was better than the dim vision
of tbat pa\<; vacant face. After that I was alone.
Only one event broke iu upon my nine years vacancy. One day (it must have been a year or two
after my companion left me) the dungeon door'
was opened, and a voice. I know not from whence,
uttered these words: i( By order ot his Imperial
Majesty. I intimate to yon that your wife died a
year ago." Then the door waa shut. I heard no
more. Tbey had but flung this great agony in
upon me, and left me alone with it again."
The Increase of 'Sandy Hook.— At the late ses--
Bion of the Scientific Congress at Albany, several
papers giving results of tbe U. S. Coast Survey
were laid before the association, by permission of
the Secretary of the Treasury. A paper on the
" Cause of the Increase of Sandy Hook " was read
by Prof. Bache. A laborious examination into
this matter had convinced those engaged that the
growth of the Hook is not an accidental phenomenon, but is produced by a remarkable northwardly
current along both shores of the Hook, the outer
one extending across the whole bread h of False
Hook channel, with varying velocity, and the one
inside of tbe Hook extending uearly one-third of
the distance across Sandy Hook Bay. These currents run to tbeNorth, during both the ebb and
flood tides, with varying rates, and result from
those tides directly and indirectly. The inner
current is the oue by which the flood and ebb tides
draw the water from' Sandy Hook "ay, aud tbe
outer is similarly related to those tides as they
pass .False Hook channel. In the conflict of these
two northwardly currents, outside and inside, and
ttie deposit of the materials which they carry to
the point ofthe Hook, may be found the causes of
its growth, and wbich within a century has increased it a mile and a quarter,, and at the rate of
about one-sixteenth of a mile a year during ibe
last twelve years.

The Printer's Devil and his Love.
A printer's devil was pierced in the heart
With charms of a little miss ;
Quoth he to tlie lass, " My dear, ere we part,
Let us seal our love with a kiss."
The maiden replied, as the imp she eyed,
• Dost thou think I'll let you revel
Where others before you have vainly tried—
No, no. I'll not kiss the devil 1 '■
Years rolled along, and the sweet little lass
Became an old sorrowful maid ;
She lived like a queen—was rich—but, alas !
He beauty was all decayed.
Once again'they met, aud the old maid tried
To recall her former issue,
But he gaily smiled, and only replied.
■'The devil now wouldn't kiss you V
