WJUTTKW AT MY MOTHER1* GRAVE.
BT O. D. PRBNTICB.
The trembling dew-drops fall,
Upon tha shutting flower, like souls at rest,
Tbe stars shine gloriously—-and all
Save me are blest.
Mother, I love thy grave!
The violet, with its blossoms blue and mild,
Waves o'er tby head ; when shall it wb>vo
Above thy child?
'Tib a sweet flower—yet must
Its bright leaves to tho coming tempos* bow.
Dear mother, 'tis thine emblem—dust
Is on tby brow.
And I could love to die—
Yo leave untaated life's dark, bitter streams,
By thee, as erst in childhood lie
And share thy dreams.
And must I linger here.
To stain tho plumaga of thy sinless years,
And mourn the hopes of childhood dear
With bitter tears?
Ay, mast I linger here,
A loeely branch upon rt withsied tree,
Whose last frail leaf, untimely sear,
Went down with thee ?
Oft from life'swithcring bower,]
Instill communion with the paflt, I tuiro
And muse oa thee, tho only flower
In memory's urn.
And when the evening pale,
A weary mourner on the dim blue wave,
I sigh to hear the night winds wail
Around tby grave.
Where la thy spirit flown ?
I gazs above—thy look is inmgod there—
I listen—and thy gautlu tone
Is on the air !
Oh, come whilst hers I press
Jfy brow upon thy grave, and in those mild
And thrilling tones of tenderness
Bless! bless thy child!
Yes, bless thy weeping child,
And o'er thine urn, religion's shrine,
Oh, give his spirit undetiled,
To blend with thlue.

KOMASCE OF jLIFE.
Wo heart! tho particulars -jr-isterday of one of
ihose strange e-jiaeden iu lift, by which the old
adage of " trath in stranger than fiction" tv&9 fully
illuitrated. About aix years eince, a lady named
Mrs, Martha Wood, accompanied *by her eon, his
•wife and a couple of children, arrived in this city
from New Bedford, Mass. She stated that .she- wan
* widow of twenty-four years standi*-!";, hor hus-Iinnii
having b«ea tbe mate ofa whaler, which hail been
lost at sea. The family had resided for the greater
portion of the timo on Liberty street, Ur. Wood,
tho son, working at hia trade, which id that ^f a
cooper,
T«terday morning a grey-headed and toil-worn
man called at the residence of the family, and,
eeeiag Mr. Wood, iaquired for the widow, who,
fceiug called into tha room, while gazing intently
at the stranger, whose eyes were fixed mournfully
■upon her, requested to know his busineis.
"Do you not know me, Martha?'' Baid he, and
aa the sound of his voice, like the memory of aa
olden melody, met her ear, one gave vent to a hysterical cry, and fainted in tha arms which were
opened to receive her.
t The tale Is soon told ; the ship in which he had
■ado bi8 last voyage from New Bedford had been
east away ia the South Sea Islands, and he was
one of the few who escaped a watery grave. After enduring almost unheard-of privations, he euc'
ceeded, after thirty years absence, in reaching his
native eity. From a brother of hia wifehe lusirned
their present location, and returned hero to iind
her whom he had left ayoungandhlooinlnghride,
far advanced in the evening of life, while the
fant, upon whose lips, when last bo saw him, he
had imprinted a father's kiss, waa now a stalwart
nan and the head of a family. How many hope*
•nd fears must hare agitated the heart of the old
mariner as he again set foot, after hia long pilgrimage, upon hie native soil.—Cincinnati ( Ohio)

I'ri'iuaTiirc Matrimony.
Markiagk is a divine and beautiful arrangement. It was not designed hy Providence solely
as the means of keeping np population, or ai a
mere social and economical convenience, but as a
blending of two wpirits into oue—Ihe masculine
representing wisdom, and the feminine ailectiou.
When there is a true spiritual nmnity between
the two, then tha design is accomplished.
Premature marriages are among the greatest
evils cf tha times ; and it would not be a bad idea
in these days oi reform if an autl-mnrrying-in-a.
hurry society was in»tituted. Now-a-days, people
leap into the life circle with no more consideration than they would partake of a dim. j little
thinking that when once in, they are there until
their end comes. There is a little, sometimes of
mutual analysis of di*poiition, aud comparison of
taate and affections. They seem to fancy that,
if there are any discrepancies, the fatal Gordian
knot, which can bo seldom cut, and never united,
will harmonize all.
The number whe have felt thia truth—the
number still feeling it to their heart's core—are
incalculable. They recognise it as the great mistake of their lives. The chain to them ii not a
silken one, but a cable of iron that tightens around
them more, crushing out all hope and energy
substituting hate for love, and eating out with its
rust the very inner life ot the bouI.
Boys and girls now marry to a greater extent
than ever before, instead of waiting till they become full grown matured men and women. The
young dandy, as soou as he gets out of short jackets, and a little furze gathered on hia upper lip —
and the young miss, as soon aa she emerges from
the nursery and abbreviated frocks—think they
are qualified to assume the most solemn responsibilities oflife. And so if " Pa " and "Ma" wont
consent, they post off to some Gretna Green, and
there take obligations tbat, iu ninety-nine cases
out ofa hundred, they will never cease bitterly to
repent.
Marriage should never be the result of fancy
The ballroom and the evening party rarely de-
velope real character. Under the exhilirating influence of the dance—the glare of the lights, and
the merry squib and joke, the dissoluie young
man may appear amiable, and the slatternly scold
loveable. Matches made at such places, or under
similar circumstances, arc not of the class that
originate in heaven. They aro more generally
conceived in the opposite place, and bring forth
only iniquity. The true way to learn each other
is to do it at home, in the parlor, in the kitchen,
and on occasions that test the temper. We sec
the result of these unions in the almost daily divorces thut are taking place, in the running awav
of husbands, leaving their wives and children to
starve, and iu the elopen.ent of wives. Not only
this, but we witness it in broken-spirited men,
made old in the prime oflife, struggling on for
mere food and clothing and shelter ; and in women, cross, dirty, sluggish and wrinkled.
It would be quite impossible for us to depict
faithfully the multitude of physical and moral
evils that result from these sinful marriages—for
sinful they are. They ruin the body, corrupt tlie
morals, aud stupify the mind. And tho result
does not stop with husband and wife. There are
the children. They partake of the feebleness and
vices ofthe parents, boih physical aud moral, and
go out into the busy world stunted and gnarled.
God pity them!
We would not he understood as speaking
against the institution of marriage. It is holy,
beautiful and beneficient. But let every one take
hie mate or none. Let not the brave eagle pair
with the stupid owl, nor the gentle dove with the
carrion crow. Like should have like. It is a
glorious sight to see two old people who have
weathered the storms and basked in the sunshine
of life together, go hand in hand, lovingly aud
truthfully down the gentle declivity of time, wirh
no angers, nor jelousies, nor hatred garnered up
against each other, and looking with hope and
joy to the everlasting youth of heaven where they
shall be one forever. That is the true marriage—
for it is the marriage of spirit with spirit. Their
love is woveu in a woo E of gold, that neither time,
nor death, nor eternity can sever.
A Mnrtyi- to SrlMuc.
After Franklin made his groat discovery of the
identity of lightning and ffl-sctrtftttj, by means of
a kite sent up into the air during a thundur utorm,
many philosophers eagerly sought to repeat tho
experiment. Among these, Pro^'s^i.ir Rich man, of
St. Petersburg, was the most indefatigable and
fearless. In pursuing a Aeries of experimeats on
atmospheric electricity, he erected what was called a guomoa, which consisted principally of a
Leyden jar, communicating with an iron rod,
which rose some feet above tlie roof of his house ;
aud an eloctrometer, consisting of a linen thread
with half a grain of lead tied to it. Of course
when the gnomon was charged with electricity,
and had communicated that ihiiil to the thread aid
the metal, the latter, b-jing easily moved, would
be repelled from the guomoa ; and its angular
ascent on the face of a dividod quadrant or Index,
indicated the force of tho electrieity which had
been accumulated.
On the !)th of August, 1753. Richman obtained
from the end of the rod electric flashes, which
could bo heard at several ieet distant; and if any
person touched the apparatus a smart shock was
felt. On the 6th of August, 17;>:i., the profosser,
while at a meeting of the Academy of Sciences
heard the sound of distant thunder ; aud having
previously made every arrangement for malting
experiments, he instantly quitted the ftasombtj*,
taking with him his engineer Sokolow, to muke
draughts of whatever might appear interesting in
the phenomenon. On their arrival at Richmnu's
house the plummet of the electrometer was found
elevated four degrees from the perpendicular : in
[Other words, the electricity in the gnomon had
1 accumulated to such an extent that it repelled the
lead to the distance mentioned. While tiie philosopher was in tho act of describing to his companion the dangerous consequences wliich might
follow if tlie lead rose to forty-fire degrees, a tre-
mendonfl crash of thunder shook the city. He
bent his head over the gnomon to observe the indications of tbe electrometer, aud in this position
with his head a foot from the iron rod, a globe of
bluish white fire, about the size of Mr. Sokolow'n
fjpt, shot from the rod to tbe professors bend, accompanied by a report as loud as that of a pistol.
The discharge proved fatal; he fell back on a
chest and expired in a moment. Sokolow was
stupified and benumbed hy a kiad of vapor which
had generated, and lua clothes were covered with
burnt marks produced by tbe red-hot fragments of
a metallic wire which had struck Mr person. On
recovering himself, he rushed out ofthe house,
and made known thu terrible disaster whieh bad
tak'jn place. In the meanwhile, Madame Rich-
man, alarmed by the thunder-stroke, hastened to
the chamber, and found her lifeless husband in the
attitude of sitting upon the chest, aud ieauing
against the wall.
The medical part of the case is not without interest. Aid was of course instantly obtained ; a
vein was opened, but no blood flowed Irom it; and,
although every attempt was made to restore life
by violent friction and other means, all was in
vain. 'When the body was turned, a small quantity of blood fell from the mouth, and from a red
spot which marked the forehead, a few drops also
oozed out. Several red and blue spots, not unlike
leather shrunk by burning, were discovered ou
different parts of the body. The shoe of the left
foot was burnt open, and a blue mark appeared on
the foot beneath the aperture. Tho stocking exhibited no corresponding hole, and the coat had
been uninjured. On opening the body, neither
the brain or the cranium showed any appearance
ofinjury; a little blood appeared in the cavities
below thelungft, and in the lungs towards the back,
which were a dark brown color. The hoart glands
aud smaller intestines were all inllamed, but the
entrails were of the natural appearance. Some
silver in one of the pockets remained uninjured by
the electric fluid. Immediately after the fatal explosion, the house was filled with a sulphurous vapor. A clock was stopped in the adjoining room ;
the ashes of the hearth were strewed about: the
door caee of the room was rent asunder, and a part
of the door itself waa torn off. The Leyden jar
wa3 shivered, and the metallic filings were scattered about the apartment.
A very refined clergyman, who feared to offend
the delicate ears of hie faithful flock, is in tho
habit of soiteuing the Scripture to their capacities.
Not many Sabbathsago hepreached from the text,
" Let him that ie without sin among you, cast the
first stone," but which he very rccouditely paraphrased as follows :—" It is the prerogative of innocence to project the initiatory boulder."

Those who have yisited th» Fair at the Crystal
Palace must have noticed the patent alarm bed—
n Dovn-Bast invention. The purpose of ttuso
beds is to prevent a person from oversleeping
himself, or if he does not wuke at the time the
alarm is sou:u!i.'il, tlie m.uliini'ry operates ia such
I n;;mner r\* to ;*huek him out upon tha floor,
ranch to hia wtonlslnMati Par instance, when »
person wishes to retire to bed, ho winds up &n
alarm clock attached to the bed and sets it at tho
hour he wishes to get up. At the appointed
hour, the alarm sounds, aud, if the iteoptr i.i
awakened, hu may uriso ; bat, if he does uot
aw Like-, the BttohlBSrj uf iin- olook, operating ou
ft lever, r:psot!** the bad frame, and the occupant
in kilted nut upon the floor. The bed is worthy
the inspection of heads of families, who has tho
care of sluggards and sleepy beads.
We have a good story to tell la connection
with one of those beds (says tho Uncle Sam, a
" Besting '' paper.) A friend of ours recently got
inerried to a lovely aud interesting young woman.
In the bouse of the bride's father, whero the wedding took place, one o( tho "alarm beds" hail
just previously been introduced. The wedding
party was very large, fashionable, aud everythiag
went off with the utmost merriment, the eater-
tainment being of the most generous kind. At
leui'i.l]. the, fi';i-.-.':*.g over, and the hour of midnight past, the guests began to retire, aud th*
lights to grow dim in tl.e house. The "old
folks " hinted gently about sleep, and tlio bride
and her lord grew weary and imp'ticnl. It was
eusily seen that they wished to be alone, and tho
lady was accordingly escorted to her chamber, to
which blissful haveu the blushing bridegroom
soon followed her.
We will not attempt to draw n picture of what
ensued, but sutlioe it to say that while the interesting pair weie in the mi-Jst of one of tlieir most
interesting tefe-a-tetes, a clicking was heard, and
the astonished couple, the next instant, found
themselves launched on the floor in the middle of
tbe room, fast looked in each other's anna, holding on like good fellows, La momentary expectation of an earthquake. They survived tho shouk
however. The fact of it teas, tho" alarm bed"
had boon assigned them for their nuptial couch,
and the bride's youngest brother, the miselnev-
0U8 devil, Tom, had taken the liberty to set the
alarm, at what he said he thought would be " tho
auspicious hour." lie got his ears boxed tlio
next morning, and our friend W. D. S. has been
suspicious of alarm beds ever since.

Peninsular War, relates the following :—"Two of
the Spftoitb regtmeata which had been quartered
in Funen, were cavlary, mounted on line black
long-tailed Aadalasian horses, it waa impracticable to bring oil these horses, about 1.100 in
number—and Romano was not a man who could
order them to be destroyed ; he was fond of horses
himself, and know thai, every man waa attached
to the beast which had carried him to fur and so
faithtully. Their bridles wore, therefore, taken
off, find they were turned loose upon tho beach.
A scene ensued such as probably never before
was-witnessed. They werejseusiblc that they wero
no longer under any restraint of human power.
A general conflict ensued, In which, retaining tho
discipline they had leumed, they charged each
other la Squadrons Of ten or twelve together,
then closely engaged,'striking with tlieir forefeet,
and biting and tearing each other witb the most
ferocious rage, nud trampling over those who wero
beaten down, till the shore, in tho course of an
hour, was strewn with the dead and disabled.
Fart of them had been set free on rising ground
at a distance ; they no sooner heard the roar of
battle, tlian they came thundering d iwn over tho
intermediate hedges, and catching the contagious
madness, plunged into the light with equal fury.
Sublime as tho soune was, it was too horrible to
be long contemplated, and Itoruano, in mercy,
gave orders to destroy them ; but it was found
too dangerous to attempt thin, and after the last
boat had quitted tlio beach, the few horses that
remained were still seen engaged in the dreadful
work of mutual destruction."

Dr. Trask, who arrived in this city on Saturday,
from a tour through the Southern counties, has
favored us with some specimens of the newly dis-
COVefed mineral, which bears aa almost perfect
resemblance* to beef tallow. He informs ua that
it was tftken from a tunnel near Mountain Pass,
at a depth of ISO feet from a perpendicular surface. There appeared to be but a single deposit
m€ it, and having no means of analyzing it, he has
been unable to determine Its properties. It doubtless contains magnesium, and when exposed to
heat possesses a calcareous quality—turning white
aud crumbling. To the touch, it bears the greatest
resenibianco to tallow, and leaves an oily feeling
upon the hand, that lias doubtless given It tho
name it bears. It will not probably be brought
to any use. aud ii only remarkable for the close
resemblance it has to tallow. So says the Stockton Argus.

And I could love to die— Yo leave untaated life's dark, bitter streams, By thee, as erst in childhood lie And share thy dreams. And must I linger here. To stain tho plumaga of thy sinless years, And mourn the hopes of childhood dear With bitter tears? Ay, mast I linger here, A loeely branch upon rt withsied tree, Whose last frail leaf, untimely sear, Went down with thee ? Oft from life'swithcring bower,] Instill communion with the paflt, I tuiro And muse oa thee, tho only flower In memory's urn. And when the evening pale, A weary mourner on the dim blue wave, I sigh to hear the night winds wail Around tby grave. Where la thy spirit flown ? I gazs above—thy look is inmgod there— I listen—and thy gautlu tone Is on the air ! Oh, come whilst hers I press Jfy brow upon thy grave, and in those mild And thrilling tones of tenderness Bless! bless thy child! "Do you not know me, Martha?'' Baid he, and aa the sound of his voice, like the memory of aa olden melody, met her ear, one gave vent to a hysterical cry, and fainted in tha arms which were opened to receive her. t The tale Is soon told ; the ship in which he had ■ado bi8 last voyage from New Bedford had been east away ia the South Sea Islands, and he was one of the few who escaped a watery grave.
