T.ATIR FROM SONOKA!!
Annihilation or h. a. Crobi»'a Party * :
Henry JI. Crabb and ninety of his Party Mas-
snered by the Mexicans,'at Cavorea. Sonora.
Tn our last issue wc publish.-] a rumor of the
entire deetruction of Hei ry A.Crabb's party, numbering; 100 m.n, by the Mexicans in Sonora. By
fte following statement of the facte, kiadly fur-
nif-hf-d us by a gentleman just arrived Irom Port
Yuma, it will be seen that lhe rumor has been con
firmed, He say-.:
Tlie expedition into Sonora, under th1? command
ot II. A. Crabb, ban had a most disastrous- end.
Late in March, Crabb's party left Sonoita. A'ono-
ra, and marched lo Cavorea, a small Mexican town
near Point Lobos, on tbeGult of California. The
first intention was to have proceeded to Altar, but
news of its partial fortification ai'd susceptibility
of a etrong deteQOe caused tbe diversion on Cavorea. On ibe morning of tbe 1st oi April the
parly of Americana entered the suburb, of tbe
town. They were met by a body of Mexican troops,
commanded by Rodriguez It is said that Rodriguez advanced to fpeak to Crabb, when the Americans opened fire and killed ibe Mexican command
er and several others. The Mexicans immediately retreated—some to the mountains, but the ran-
jority to the church, which had been placed in a
state of defence, and had at the time Crabb en-er-
ed the town a number of beeves roasting whole in
front of it. to feed the Mexican troops.
It appears tbat here occurred Crabb's first and
fatal mistake. Instead of at one* charging and
taking the church, which would have given him
the town, he occupied several houses on the corner of the Plaza, in front of tbe church.
The Mexicans at first deserted the most of the
town, but gradually being emboldened returned
and hemmed the Americans in. Fighting continued eight days, with a loss to the Americans of
twenty five killed. The Mexican loss is reported
by themselves at twenty-live, but is supposed to
have been much greater, a« high as 200. On the
eighth d--y au attempt was made by two of Crabb's
men to blow up the church, by placinL. a keg ol
powder under the portic.i and firing it. The de-
vo'ed ni'-n who attempt, d this both were killed,
and Crabb in said to have been wounded in super-
intending it. It is said an offer was made by Crabb
to reiire if the Mexicans would allow it. He had
refused to retire when the offer was made I im. after the fighting had continued two d .ys, and now
the Mexicans, confident of his weakness and their
triumph refused. The Americans were giadually
but surely caught in a snare, from which theysaw
BS escape.
By bieaking through the walls of the adjoining
hrni.-es the M. xleans forced Crabb and his men into
the corner buildings, which they repeatedly set ou
fire but which ihe Americans as often extinguish"
ed. At last a I'iipigo Indian shot into lhe roof of
the mam building occupied by the unhappy
:■■;-■' . ::._:.■•■'[ arrow. 1 he flames canghl the
roof and in a few moments th» fire was dropping
in L'p-a! ::;;;.;- iiji":! the heads nf the doomed men
within. Worn out with constant fighting, exhaust-
i'd wiiii anjifty, Iritnished by probable days of
starvation and hirsi, aud without ammunition,
Henry A. Crabb and fifty-eight men marched out
of the burning bouse, with a white flag before
them, laid down their arms and surrendered. It
is suppo-ed uncoi.diiionaliy. This was in the
night or towards morning. They were immi di-
ately tied, their hi,nds behind them, taken to a
corral mar ihe Alcalde■> office, where they were
kept until morning, when tbey were taken out in
-ii't.fl- i,! live and ten each and shot. li; the first
executions it was found that the calmness of the
Americans discomposed the executioners and they
shot too high or too low. in many eases only
wounding their victims. The backs ol the fated
DV n wt-re ihen turned to the troops aud then t;.ey
succeeded in aiming wilh better effect.
McCoun. (may he rest in peace.) owing to his
great statute, was saved this torture, a ball struck
turn full in the breast at the first lire and and he
fell dead. Crabb abjuc was reserved for a.solitary
deaths He was taken to the Alcalde's office, questioned, allowed to wriU' a letter to his wife, aud
to bave an interview with a Dr. Evans, a prisoner
in the bands oi the Mexicans, who had been in eon-
liiteim nt -ome weeks, '.tt su-picion, I he hour for
his execution having arrived, he was led out. his
hands stretched above his head and tied to a posl
in Iron! of the building h- had occupied, his race
to the post, and his back to his executioners. At
the command !lr■_■. at leas! au bundled balls were
fixed into his body, and all that was mortal of
Henry A Crabb hung dead, swinging by tiis tied
bauds, A Mexican stepped forwttid and with a
large knife, severed hie head fiom his body—the
warm blood spirting h If way across the streel.
The head was placed on a table in front, or in the
office of the ,luez, exposed to the jeering of the
populace. It was then placed in a jar of mescal
for preservation.
Two Ol the Ainsa's. O'rothers-in law of Crabb.)
are said to be killed, and aUo Rasey Liven. My
inIonium*, au intelligent man ami au eye witness
of these horrors, says Crabb died as a gentleman
should, as calmly and quietly as if he were going
to a pleasat t home.
Four men, sick, had been left at Sonoita by
Crabb. They occupied ti e house owned by E E.
Dunbar. Esq., on the American side of the line.
Ou the ISih of April, at night, a party of tweniy-
tlve Mexicans came up from San Juan, w_m to
Dunbar's bouse, look these poor sick men out of
bed tied them, and at dawn of day ca rled them
to the fool Of tlie bill, 'hot than like dogs, on
American roil, and lelt them to rot. A parly ol
Papitgo Indians, mure merciful, burled ihem. and
four solitary motii.ds now appeal, lone witnesses
of a beastly crime, to the American Government,
for revenge. Will such an appeal go unheard ?
Mr. Dunbar just escaped massacre, having left
Sonoita on the afternoon previous. The Mexicans
were furious at bis escape, iilthough he had nothing to do with ihe party except to offer shelter,
ou Americau soil, to four sick meu iu hia own
■ honse.
A party of about thirty rccruitB, under Capt.
Grant Orey, started from Toesori to join Crabb at
Cavorea. When within fifteen miles of the latter
place they were attacked by about 20O Mexicans.
Capt. Orey retreated, fighting, and regained tbe
American line, with the loss of only four killed.
The Mexican loss was about forty, Capt. Orey
deseives great credit for his skill. At every watering-place the Mexicans attempted to check him
and subdue him by thirst, but he routed tbem on
every occasion. Tbe last eight miles was a continued running fight, and his fourth man lost was
killed just at the line. Another party, of the same
strength, which left Tubac has not yet been heard
of. It is believed if Grant Orey had: been with
Crabb a different result might have been anticipated. Al.! was bad management, want of experience, and a clear rushing upon a deadly fate.
Crabb entered Cavona with eighty-four men.
All these were kill- d except the youngest, snid to
have be.en spared by the Mexican commander,
Garcia. The name of the survivor is unknown,
but he Is said to be a boy of sixtren of seventeen.
The Mexicans at Cavorea were about 500 strong.
Major Bob Wood and Major Tozer are safe. They
were with Capt, Orey's party. Capt. It. N. Wood,
late Fillmore elector, is among the dead.
From Mtaragja,
The most important mws is that Walker is
hemmed in in the Plaza of Rivas, the allies being
enirenched within four hundred yards of the enemy, who were subsisting on mule and dog flesh,
with sugar in place of salt for food, and in whose
camp sickness was prevalent.
The following is fhe official dispatch from Gen.
Juau Mora, who has assumed the command of the
allied fore s :
The siege of Rivas is more complete than could
have been hoped with the small force at-ry disposal. The good selection of postB and the ser
vice of my scouting parties, bave contributed
much towards the success of the siege. A twenty-
four-pounder that I have planted has done much
damage to tbe city and dispirited the enemy.
Day after to-gtorrow, at the farthest, I shall
place in battery at the poi-t of the Fuebla, occupied by Gen. Xatruch. another gun of equal calibre, brought by my orders from the Fort ol San
Carlos, which will cross its fires with that at my
headquarters, and which will completely destroy
or dislodge the filibusters. Walker and his forces
are reduced to feed on mule meat and dogs, sea.
sound with sugar instead of salt, and of this they
make a most miserabb ration. Those, pushed by
hunger, who go out to hurt for plaintains, are
driven in by my troops without having effected
t:;eir object. Every night I send in little guerilla
parties from each of my posts, who advance to the
entrenchments of the Plaza, thus obliging the filibusters to be constantly on the alert at night, so
that they have no time to rest. This courso united to the*certainiy they feel that they are completely hemmed in, produces a desertion among
them of about five each day to my headquarters.
I calculate tbit triple that number daily take the
road to Cos'.a Rica.
The filibusters bave arrived at such extreme pusillanimity that one ol their deserters of yesterday
returned from my camp to his old quarters in the
Plaza, (which are the same that Gen. Salaznr occupied when we were last year in Rivas,) distributed some of the proclamations of your Excellency, and taking a rifle returned freely to my
carnp.
Since yesterday fourteen deserters from the enemy have come into my camp,
I am assured that a division of Guatemalans
will soon be iu Granada. I shall send the steamer
San Carlos tor them to-morrow.
Every probability is in favor of our speedy triumph.
I am your Excellency's obedient servant.
To the President. JoiS J. Mora.
It is stated that more than half of the volunteers
who left tbis State ou the Sierra Nevada to join
Walker, were killed on the road between San Juan
del Sud and Rivas.
At latest -ylvices Fort St. Carlo? was yet in the
possession of the Costa Ricans, and likely to remain so. On March 29th a numher of recruits
reached a point below Castillo, but tbe Costa Ri-
can officers felt confident that they could prevent
them from rendering active assistance to Lockridge, or reaching Walker.
A number of deserters from W'a'ker bad arrived,
it was staled, at Liberia. Cosia Rica; among tbem
Walker's Quartermaster Geneial,
On March 16th. Capt. Antouio, ofthe Guatema
lean schooner Areneion. was shot for makiug au
arrangement to assist Walker.
Gas From Wood.—We witnessed on Thursday
night, says tbe Stole Journal, the first illumina
tion of the Orleans Hotel, by wood gaslight, and
it proves to be very far from a failure. The lights
were bright and of a pleasant hue. Gaslight made
from wood, and wood alone, is one of the greatesi
improvements on artificial light, the introduction
of which Cal'fornia's welcome will not fail. Gaslight produced by our inexhaustible forests—by
the pitch-pine, whieh has been until this day useless either for lumber or firewood, opens a market
for an Important vegetable production so profusely snread over our mountains We hope that the
new process will sion be adopted by all our mining towns, and give a due reward to tbe enterprising men who show to the old country that in
Cnlifornia brainsasw.il ns hands are hard at work.
We learn from the inventors, who are owners of a
patent attached to the process, that their apparatus for produo.ins wood tras'ight is of the greatest
simpli i'v, and does not cost over one-third of
ihat employed tor cbal : that tbey get more ga=
nut of one pound of wood th».n ran be got onl of
ihe same quantity of the best co> I; that one cord
nf pine wood weighs sixty hundred, at least, and
will cost, delivered In onr town. $12 only, while
ihe same weigh* of coal is worth at least $70 in
onr market: and that they obtain by the distillation of the wood a very irood article of charcoal
and several other useful bodies, which are saleable every where and pay for a large portion ofthe
expenses, ffs will be able, in a few days, to give
a foil description of tbe new procuss of wood gas-

The latest intelligence from Spain, received by
the .5panif-h Minister at "Washington, is to the ef'
feet that the Mexican difficulty will be arranged
amicably, and that the threatened operation^
against Vera Cruz will not take plaee.
Later advices from Mexico state that the government is almost bankrupt, and that payments at
the Custom Houses at Vera Cruz and the city of
Mexico has been suspended. Gen. Blanearte was
in prison at Guadalajara, and was to be tried by
Court Martial.
The new Clarendon-Dallas Treaty, as revised by
the Cabinet, has been eent out to Lmdon by a
special messenger. Tbe alterations are said to be
of such a nature that tbey cannot fail to be acceptable to the English Government.
It is said that a new treaty with Mexico has
been drafted by the Cabinet at Washington, and
is already on tbe route to tbat country. It proposes tbe purchase by our Government of tbe
States of Sonora, Sinaloa and Lower California
including the Gulf, and also the establisbment of
a line of postal steamers between SfcW Orleans and
Vera Cruz,
Robert J. Walker has accepted theGoTernorship
of Kansas, and will SOOD depast for that Territory,
Richard F, Stanton, of Tennessee, is appointed
his Secretary, and has already departed to his post.
The New York Legislature lately adopted resolutions providing for an amendment to the Constitution, abolishing tbe property qualifications ta
regard to colored vote-?. This movement grew
out of the Dred Scott decision. The questkm of
negro citizenship is also to come up in Rhode Island where at the recent State election tbe Democratic inspectors struck from tne poll lists tbe
names of all the colored voters, on the plea that
since the Dred Scott decision they are no longer
citizens. Tbe matter will be carried before tbo
.Supreme Court of that State.
Tbe Republicans and Americans of Pennsylvania coalesced in convention lately, and aoniinat-
ed the Hon. David Wil mot for Governor.
New Orleans papers state that the Tehauntepec
road bas been accepted by tbe Mexican Government,
The New Granadian Minister bas arrived at
Washington It is rumored that the difficulty between our Government and New Granada has-
reached such a point that the speedy dispatch of
a large beet to the Isthmus is highly probable,
The following appointments of New York officers has been made : Augustus Sehell, Collector ;
Emanuel B. Hart, Surveyor : George N. Sander3,
Navy Agent ■ Isaac V. Fowler, Postmaster : Isaiab
Rynders, U S. Marshal,
A not very reliable report reaches us Irom New
Orleans that our Government is negotiating foF
the purchase of the Tebauutepec route for fifteen
millions.
Advices from Europe are to the 21st March-
Parliament has been dissolved, and an exciting
canvass has commeueed for the next Parliament.
Lord Palmerston wa3 invited to run for London,
but he has decided to stand for his old borough,
Tiverton. The Mexican envoy had arrived at Madrid. Matters in China remain comparatively unchanged. Difficulties have broken out between
England and Japan. Two British war vessels have
lorced a passage into the port of Nangaski. Tbe
Japanese made uo resistance- No cause is assigned for this act. It is reported thct negotiations
are concluded between England and France, by
which tbe latter agrees to furnish 20,000 troops
for the China war. They are to be sent ont in English ships.
Washington correspondents state Lord Napier,
the new British minister at Washington, has bad
several interviews with our Government on the
Chinese question. England wants tbe United
States to join her and France in a demonstration
against China, but onr Government bas peremp-
to-. iiy declined.
The jury in tbe case of Lee, indicted for the
murder of Mr. Hume, a respectable merchant at
Alexandria, rendered a verdict of acquittal.
It is stated that a settlement of twenty families
at the head waters of the Des Moines river bad
been attacked by Indians, and that all were mur.
dered, or are in captivity.
Major Toiivy, late of Walker's army, who left
the Texas at Key West, in the course of a conversation with one of tbe passengers, stated that he
iSok ont lo Nicaragua eighty-one recruits, and
with the exception of his own son and a captain,
all of his cemmand had been either killed in battle or come to their deaths by sickness.
Ticket-swindling has superceded and thrown
entirely into the shade the old mock auction business in New York, and is just now the most approved method of selling tbe verdant ones. On
every line of railroad, steam or sailing vessel, it
is practised. Some Californians that arrived in
the last steamer were sadly cheated by spurions
tickets for tbe Erie railroad sold by runners that
boarded the vessel as soon as she touched shore,
Bnt on no route is this practised to so great an
extent or so persistently as on passengers for Calilornia : not a steamer sails but what any quantity
of complaints are lodged witb tbe police against
guilty parties
but for the two reasons that the
ee 6od it more profitable not to make arrests,
lui that heretofore no law taking cognizance of
such an ofience, has beeu in existence, the guilty
parties go unpunished.
David Hunt, Esq. of Rodney, Mass. baa transmitted io the Secretary of the American colonization society a check for $25,000. payable at tbe
bank ofthe Republ e in New York.
The Hon. C. C. Chatfield, a well-lino *rn Democratic politician of Illinois, and ex-Senator Bayard
of Delaware, are very dangerously ill of the National Hotel epidemic.
Geu. Shields has been elected President of the
Minneapolis and Cedar Valley railroad company.
The company is fully organized, and stock to tbe
amount of $230,000 subscribed.
