HAVING purchased the patent right of the above
valuable invention, for tbe purpose of supplying tho counties ot Los Angeles, San Bernardino
and San Diego, is now prepared to execute all orders with which be may be favored.
The public are aware that it has been the study of
scientific men, architects and builders, for many years
to discover an article lor Hoofing purposes, that will
withstand sudden changes of climate, be impervious
to water, and of sure protection agaiust fire. The
inventor of thjs I'oofuig labored many years to combine articles whieh would answer the above purpose
and obviate tbe diilicuUics of rust nnd decay attendant upon tin and shingles, and tbe destruction by
the sun and frost, of the various compositions usiid
for roofing. This be succeeded in doing, and now,
alter six years of the severest trial we would invite
the careful attention of all interested in such matters,
believing that they will be fully convinced of its
practical value both for durability and economy, in
which respects wc believe that its equal is not at
present known. Tbis roofing can readily be applied
to roofs of every description, either steep or flat, and
can be put on over shingles or tin, being much cheaper than the first and at balf the co3t of the latter.
Two coats of the mastic put on over an old leaky
tin roof, will mike it as good as new at one-third of
the cost. In preparing this roofing a heavy drilling
or canvass is used, wbich is thoroughly saturated
with a perfectly water proof propuration, after which
it receives a thick coating, upon both sides, of the
flour of soapstone, which sets into the texture oftbe
canvass, and gives it a firm body, making it very
elastic and durable. After the canvass, as prepared,
is put upon tbe roof, another coating of mastic,which
ia thoroughly filled witb sand, is given it, making it
fireproof in every respect. By exposure, this coating becomes firm and solid, giving you a roof that
can be walked upon with perfect impunity, and as
durable as anything known; and we do most candidly
and unhesitatingly believe, far superior to anything
of the kind yet discovered; and after a severe test
of many years, stand as reliable aud good as when
first put on. without change or decay. All that we
ask is, that a careful examination may be given it,
and we feel convinced that it will bear all the recommendation which we After of it. Annexed we give

The Pittsburg Post, alluding to the one bun-
dreth anniversary of old Fort Duquesne, says:—
One hundred years ago there was not a single
white man in Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana and Illinois Territories. Then what is now lhe most flourishing part of America was as little known as the
country around the mountains of the moon. It
was not until 1769, tbat tha "Hunter of Kentucky,'' the gallant aud adventurous Boone, left
his home in North Carolina to become the first
pettier of Kentucky.. The first pioneers in Ohio,
did uot settle until twenty yours alter this time.
A hundred years ago Canada belonged to France,
aud the whole population of the United Suites did
not exceed a milliou aud a halfof people. A hundred years ago the great Frederick of Prussia was
performing Ihose great exploits wbich have made
h m immortal in military annals, and with his lit-
:J-e monarchy was sustain ing a single-handed contest witb Russia, Austria and France—tbe three
great powers of Europe combined. A hundred
years ago Napoleon was not born, and Washington was a young and modest Virginia colonel, and
the great events of two worlds, in which these two
great but dissimilar men took leading parts, were
then scarcely foreshadowed. A bundled years ago
the Union was tbe most loyal part ofthe British
Empire, and ou the political horizon no speck indicated the struggle which, within a score of
years thereafter, established the greatest republic
of tiie world. A huudred years ago there wen;
but four newspapers in America, steam engiucs
had not been imagined, and railroads aud telegraphs bad not entered into the remotest conceptions of iran. Wheu we come to look back at it
through the vista of history we liud tiiat to the
century which has passed bas been alloted more
important eveuts in their bearing upon the happiness of the world than almost auy other which has
elapsed since the creation.
A hundred years hence what will be the developments? lt is past finding out except in one
thing—a thought which astonished Xerxes when
he stood upon Mount A thos—all. with but few ex
ceptions, now living will be dead,

wasGrotinus.    Goldsmith "wrote like an angel,
and talked like Poor Poll."    Burke was entertaining, enthusiastic, and interesting in conversation.
Curran was a convivial Deity.    Leigh Hunt  was
" like a pleasant stream" in conversation.    Car-
lyle doubts, objects and constantly demurs.

How strange it must  appear to loreigners, wdio
hear our pams of praise to Washington, "the Father
of  bis  Country,"   "the  Example   for   American
youth," " the unselfish  Patriot,"  as offered upon
every fit occasion—and yet Congress, wbich is supposed to represent tbe people, has millions to offer
for the   acquiring   of unwilling subjects, but not
wherewithal to purchase the last resting-place of
Washington.    The   following,  from   tbe   Buffalo
Commercial, is very pithy and   exactly iu point:

sociation waited upon  the lady, at her apartments
at tbe St. Dennis Hotel, one mcrning of this week,
to solicit the proceeds of one of her Shakspearean
readings, in aid of the Monument Fund.    The case
was very elaborately stated by the chairman oftbe
committee, and tbe  'Mast ofthe Kernbles," after
beariug all that was to be heard, drew herself up
to the entire  longitude of ber magnificent proportions, aud said with a frown :
"Lad.iee, 1 respect your motives, but have no
toleration for the means you are resorting to to
perpetuate the memory of George Washington. If
win vjumcj   ia  1,0  poor, or  too mean, or loo un
grateful to take upon itself, through the National
Legfelature; so obvious a duty, better that Mount
Vernon be sold as a cattle market, than that il
should be purchased by the proceeds of charily
balls, flash newspapers and quack doctors. My
bumble abilities are at your service, but with the
proviso thut, whatever amount of money they may
yield, it shall be presented to Congress as tbe first
donation, to enable them to discharge a duty;
which ought to be dscharged by them or not at

Sir. Hunter made a speech against the proposition, and was followed by Messrs. Mason, Clay and
Shields.
Mr. Douglas took .strong gro'Jud in favor of giving the money to the President. Jie thought the
prospect of purchasing gloomy, but was willing
to give the ['resident money to make tbe attempt-
Mr. Dongks said there was but one 'way to get
Cuba, and tbat was on the occurrence of another
Black Warrior case, to seize the Island by way of
retaliation, and negotiate afterwards, on the basis
ol UU Pesseditis.
Jefferson Davis was opposed to the idea of for'
cible seizure, and favored the propositiou to purchase.

Ou the vote being taken, there were only Ave
votes against Mr. Slidell's proposition.
Mr. Branch, of North Carolina, will, on Tuesday
present the report from the Committee ou Foreign  :
Affairs, for the purchase of Cuba."
It is said that the Douglas and Slidell affair is
settled, r.iiil tim!. tneeV gentlemen are fast becom--
ing friends. Hope is expressed generally tbat tha
individual assumption <f Judge Douglas bas been
chastened, aud he wil) hereafter act with the Democratic party. From present appearances, notwithstanding the vituperation of his indiscreet ''
friends, such might be the inference.

A Noui.e PuweE.—The ancestor who laid the
foundation ofthe ducal family of Leeds, was a
young man named Osborne, who served his apprenticeship to Sir William' Hewitt, a citizen and
afterwards Lord Mayor of Loudon in the reign of
Queen Elizabeth. Sir. William, as the story goes,
was a pio maker, aud lived on old London fridge,
which, as our readers doubtless Know, was not au
open structure like the present edifice, but consisted of a covered way or street on arches, with shops
and churches ail along it. During Edward Osborne's apprenticeship—as good or bad luck would
have it—the fair Miss Bessy Hewitt, Sir William's
ouly daughter, whilst feeding a pet bird, fell from
ber father's window into the Thames, and-would
have beeu drowned, had not Osborne, being a good
swimmer, plunged in after the young lady, and
saved her life at the risk of his own. Our readers
will easily imagine tbat matters did not end here,
but lhat a tender regard for each other soou arose
between the daughter and the apprentice of old
Sir William, and that while gratitude prompted
the young lady to make herself particularly agreeable to Osborne, hie master continued to look upon him with a more favorable eye than ever. Ac-
cordi'g y, as soon as Osborne bad served his time.
Six William offered him bis daughter's band,
which the apprentice of course waa not loath to
accept. That daughter's grandson married a
daughter of Nevill Lord Latimer, by whom he had
asoi. Sir Thomas Osborne, Viscount Latimer, Earl
of D.mby, Marquis of Carmarthen, and Duke of
Leeds.

Elopement.—a young lady ol Georgetown, on
the road from Stockton lo Sacramento, about 30
miles from the latter place, was eloped with one
aigiil last week, in San Joaquin comity, between
1 and 2 o'clock in tlie moraine, She was tile only

were opposed to the match, but have come round
like sensible people end beBtowed their sanction
after the aflair was settled,
Why THB " F. F. V.s were so Caixed."—The "■
term " First Families of Virginia" originated at
the early settlement of' the State. It was found-
impossible to colonize it unless women went there.'
Accordingly a ship load was sent out, but no
planter was allowed to marry one of them until he
had first paid one hundred pounds of tobacco for
her passage. When a second ship load came, no
one would pay over Beveuty-five pounds for the
matrimonial privilege, except it wsm a vcvj superior article. Consequently, tbe descetidanls'of
all those who were sold fur one hundred pounds
of tobacco were ranked as the First Families-
while those who brought but fle7euty-uve pounds
are now ranked as the Second Families ; and the
reason why no one can ever lind any ofthe second
families is because you can't get a Virginian to
admit that bis mother ouly brought seventy-five
