'Tis a curious lUct as cvit was known, But often in human nature shown, Alike in castle or cottage, That pride, like pigs of a certain brood, Will manage to live and thrive on food As poor as pauper pottage. Of all tbe eatable things on Sartfa, The queerest thing is the pride of birth Among onr " fierce democracy ;" A biidga across a hundred years. Without a prop to save it from sneers, Not even a couple of rotten piers, Is American aristocracy. Depend upon it, my snobbish friend, Your family bread you can't ascend, Withoutyood (reason to appi elieud You may find it waxed on the other end By some piebiau vocation ; Or worse than tiiat, your bo.isted line May end in a loop of stronger twine, That plagued some worthy relation. Because you flourish in worldly affairs, Do not be haughty and put on airs With insolent pride of station ; Don't be proud arid turn up your nose At plainer people in plainer clutlien, But learn for the sake of your friends' repose. A correspondent in Life Illustrated gives the following reasons for the fictitious names many ol our ci iit.s wear : Bftlttimife is lhe "Monument City." from the great Buttle Monument, and several others of note within its limits. Boston is the "Classic City," or Athens of America, from its acknowledged pre-eminence in the literary and liue art.-; pursuits. Chicago 111., is the "Garden City," from the luxuriant richness of the surrounding country. Cincinnati is the "Queen City," so christened when it was the undisputed commercial metropolis ofthe West; but 1 believe Chicago now sets up rival claims to that distinction. Cleave'and, Ohio, is the " Forest City," from the peculiar rural aspect of its streets, squares and private grounds, which makes it oue ofthe most delightful cilies in the United States. Columbus, Ohio, is, I think, the "Fossil City mammoth Indian mound, which once stood where one ofthe city markets aro now located. TerrsHaut,Iowa, Is the "Prairie City," from its characteristic surroundings. It has a news- ptiper calb'd the Prairie t'itu. Tiffin, ()., is the ''Seneca City." from the Seneca Indians, who once had a line village where it now stands. Washington, D. 0., is the " Capitol City." Tbe leaves are to plants and trees what lungs are to animals. Platinum is the heaviest of all metals. Oxygen is essential to animal life. There are fifty-five known elements, or ponderable substances, forty-two of which are metals. and thirteen are non-metals. Thrse elements, hy uniting, form compounds, of which the material world chiefly consists. Most ofthe elements are usually solid, but it is believed by philosophers generally that by intense heat, all the solids might be converted into liquids, and these into gasses; and that by pressure and abstraction of beat, all gasses and liquids might be solidified, Iv.'pler says that the globe has vital powers, and that its elementary atoms possess instinct and will. The violin was invented about A. D. 1200, and the piano forte about one hundred and tweuty years ago. Iron is said to have bi.en discovered accidentally, by the burning of Mount Ida, 1406 years before Christ. Iron is the most useful of all ths known rnetals. It is converted into sleel by comhiniag it with a due proportion ol carbon. Iron was first made in America in 1715. Severe frost or cold injures marble. Oak is Btronger thau iron—both pieces being equal in weight! Gold and silver are the only perfect metals known ; they are called perfect because they lose nothing from the heat of fire. Imperfect metals are those wliich decrease by the heat of fire, aud ftre easily corroded hy acids ; as quicksilver, lead copper, &c. Colonbl Bkxtov ns DISSIPATION,—A short time' ago, Col. Benton delivered a leotnre in Boston, before the Apprentices' Library Association. A letter to the New York Tribune says: He opened it by giving, in a kindly, characteristic style, some very good advice to Joung men in general and apprentices in particular. Th*y saw before them, he remarked, a person who had attained an age past tbe limit which tbe Fsslmltff assigns to the line of life, and now upon thn» years which the samo Psalmist avoeiatei wilh sorrows and weakness. Thus far he was sxenpf frnm those infirmities—which are supposed to belong to it. He owed it to the course of his esrly life. Franklin (whom he warmly eulogised) was once named the American Aquatic, because he drank nothing but water. In that respect he had Imitated l'raaklin. lie totally abstained tot tht first half of his life and was temperate the other half, lb- had not only totally akataioed frnm all spirituous liquors, vinous liquor*, fermented liquors, and everything of that kind, but had kept himself free from every kind of dissipation. Xavks of TBI Days ok the Wbkk.—It it not strange tbat Christians should have been found iu the universal use of names of days ofthe week, first employed in honor ol pagan deities—as the following interesting items of history show : In the Museum oi Berlin, remarks a writer in a Newark cotemporary, iu the hall Oe voted to northern antiquities, they have tlie representation ot tbe idols from which the names of the days of our week are derived. From the idol of the sun comes Sunday. This idol is represented with his face like the sun, holding a burning wheel, with both hands on his breast signifiying his course around the world. The idol of the moon, from which comes Monday, is habited in a Bhort coat, like a man, but still holding the moon in hia bands. Ta- isco, from which cometh Tuesday, is one of the most ancient aud popular gods of the Germans, from the beautiful fossil limestone which abounds ' and is represented in a garment of skin according to their peculiar manner of clothing. The third in its vicinity, and of which much of the city is built. Council Bluffs, Iowa, on the Missouri river, is the "Bluff City.*' from the celebrated Council Blufls, nearly opposite, in Nebraska. Davenport, Iowa, is the ''Bridge City," from the great railroad bridge which spans the Mississippi at that point. HarHort. Ct., is the " Charter Oak City." from the famous charter oak oi colonial history. Indianapolis, In., is the " Railroad City," from the fact that a greater number of railroids center there than at any other point in the Union. Keokuk, Iowa, is the " Gate City," from its position as the first city in Iowa, ascending the Mississippi; and also as being the foot of the so- called lower rapids, whence it lias commerce by river with all the lower country, when the cities above have none. Louisville, Ky., is the "Falls City," from the falls of the Ohio at that point. Memphis, Tenn., Is the "Cotton City," from the vast amount of cotton shipped from its levee —perhaps the heaviest of any inland port. Montpelier, Vt., is the " Green Mountain City," beb'g the capitol of the Green Mountain State. New Haven, Ct., is the "Elm City," I believe, from the profusion of elm trees which adorn iti streets. New Lisbon, O., ia the " Dwarf City," so named in a poem located there, by one of its sons. It is a small country town, " finhhed and fenced in," but presents iu a remarkable degree all the appearance and characteristics of a well-ordered city New Orleans, is the "Crescent City," from the half-moon shape which the river once presented at that point. But tbe filling out ot the city has materially changed the crescent. New York is the " Einpiie City," or the great commercial emporium oftbe New World. Philadelphia is the "Quaker City," from its broad-brimmed founders. Pittsburgh, Pa., is the "Iron City," from its immense iron trade nnd manufactures. It is aleo emphatically the "Smoky City." Plymouth, Mass.. is the " Pilgrim City," from the eventful landing at Plymouth Rock. Rock Island, III., is the "Island City," from Rock Island in the Mississippi, nearly opposite, and oa which old Fort Armstrong and the famous railroad bridge stand. Sing Sing, N. Y., is the "Prison City," from the noted penitentiary located there. St. Louis, Mo-, ia the "Mound City," from a day ofthe week dedicated to his worship, Woden, from whence Wednesday, who was a yalient prince among the Saxons. His image was prayed to for victory. Thor, 'rom whence Thursday, is seated on a bed with twelve stars overhead, holding a hammer in the right hand. Frigs, from whence we have Friday, represented with a drawn sword in his right hand and a bow in his left. He was the giver of peace and plenty. Beater, Irom whom is Saturday, has the appearance of perfect wretchedness ; he is thin-visaged, long liaiied with a long beard. He carries a pdl of water in hia right hand, wherein are fruits and flowers. Grain must be treated like infants; wheu the head bemls it must be cradled ; and threshing is resorted to, to fit it for use. Tares are mostly found with smaller gralnr which require sowing. Groat indulgence in fruit is dangerous, and too free a use of melons produce a melancholic eflect. Sailors are attached to bays; oystermen to beeches ; and love sick maidens, to pine. Like dandies, the coating of many trees Is their most valuable portion. Cork trees and boot trees, for instance. Grain and seeds are not considered dangerous, except when about to (hoot. Several trees, like watch dogs, are Talucd for their bark. A little bark will make a rope, but it takes a large pile of wood for a cord. Affected virtue is more to bo dreaded than rice. The purest altar of love is the heart of a mother. Good-will, like a good name, is got by many good actions and lost by one. Men aro often treated tike barrels—the empty ones stood up and tbe full ones laid down. The best part of beauty is that which a picture cannot express. "Tommy, my Bon, what are you going to do with that club?" ■■ Send it to the editor of course." " But what are you going to send it to the editor for?" "Cause, he says, if anybody will send him a club he will send them a copy of his paper." The mother came pretty nenr fainting, but retained consciousness enough to ask : "But, Tommy dear, what do you suppose he wants with a club?" *' Well,-I don't know," replied the hopeful urchin, "unless it is to knockdown subscribers as don't pay for their paper." A Novel Direction,—The following, says tho Sacramento American, was on the back of a letter deposited in the Sacramento post-office, the other day, and which we sincerely hope will reach its destination. It would seem as though the writer had suffered slightly from Ihe effects of "calico and auburn hair," otherwise he could not have written po feelingly on the subject. Give this a start and send it right, To St. Louis, in the State of Pike, Where John O'Mellon may be founl, Gallanting some man's ^irl around. Hand him this, and tell him to beware, Of calico and auburn hair. " Did you preseut your accoiint ta the defendant?" inquired a lawyer of his client. " L did, air." " What did he say, sir?" " He told me to go to the devil, sir." " Well, and what did you do after that?" " Why, then I came to you." Analogy.—A little girl happening to hear her mother speak ot gotug into halj mourning, said —■' Why aro we goiug iuto half mourning, mamma, are any of our relations haifdend /" Better by far not start an object, if Its pursuit is to be abandoned at the first difficulty. Silence may be the sullen mood of aa evil teofr per, or the lofty endurance of a martyr. Two things aro nectary to the traveler la lilt, ns on the roads ; a knowledge of his way and a prrseverance in it. The honest man will rather be tho grave te his neighbors errors than iu any way expose them. The market reporter of the New York Post graphically says : " Meats are as high as ever— too high for a poor man to buy, and high enough to make a rich mau poor." Tbe tortoise beat the bare la the fable; but that's a trifle. We have soon, ia the race for soup at civic toasts, the turtle beat the bare a thousand times. A lady told her husband that she had read the "Art olLove," on purpose to be agreeable to him. " I had rathe! have love without art," be replied. As there are some faults tbat have been termed1 faults on the right aide, so there are some errorB that might be denominated errors on the safe side. Ladies are like watches, pretty enough to look at. sweet faces and delicate Imuds, but somewhat difficult to " regulate " when once set " a-goiag.'' That which ia engendered in the osceous portion ofthe frame will never be extracted trom its carnal covering! Mere evil truths are discovered by the corruption of tbe heart than by the penetration of tbe mind. Anger without apparent cauee is like fire under an empty kettle—it burns and roars to no Bort of purpose. Don't you remember old Towser, dear Kate ;. old Towscr so shaggy and kind, how housed to play, day and night, by tbe gate, and seize interlopers behind ? AU acccounts agree in estimating the yield of gold for Uie present year far above that of any year previou.-. 5 i
